My Garmin has gone missing and I can't find it.

Will look to replace it but was wondering what would be my best bet.

The lost garmin was an edge 305.

Just wondering if there was anything out there that was better at around the £100 mark?

My 305 had a nasty habit of losing all logged data if I went over a bump / rough bit of road, so I replaced it with an Edge 500 which I got s/h for £80 with some mounts and a charger.

A secondhand Edge 605 or 705.

You can guarantee that once you replace it the old one will turn up though.

Edit - I should add that I bought my 605 when they first came out (years ago), it's logged thousands of miles and has been used in all weather's...seems a bit different to the newer models!

If you don't need maps then a second hand Edge 500.

Not much consolation, but there is a text file you can edit on the filesystem that lets it display some custom text on boot. I have this set to my contact details in case it's found by a good soul.

curious - that's a good idea, I was aware of that but hadn't thought of doing anything useful with it, it just says something inane and pointless at the moment!

Thanks.

I also do this with my cameras and my phone. I take a photo of my contact details so if someone ever finds them they can return them to me if they're so inclined.

I lost my Garmin after an OTB in the first week I had it. Thankfully an eagle eyed mate found it in a puddle, happily unscathed! You learn pretty fast after that. It has a tendency to come out of the mount if you crash so I now store it in my Camelbak/zipped jersey pocket if I'm riding somewhere new and I'm unsure of the terrain.

These guys always do good deals on Garmin stuff;

http://www.handtec.co.uk/catalogsearch/result/index/?cat=0&dir=asc&order=price&p=2&q=garmin+edge

I've bought several 305's off them at about £80 a shot but they seem to have stopped listing them for now.

Wish I'd known this before I lost my edge 500 while out a couple of weeks ago 🙁

I lost my 305 watch a few years back, looked every where for it waited a few weeks and bought a new one.

Two days later I find in stuffed in the bottom of a road running shoe I'd not used for ages 👿
flogged new one to a mate for cost, so no bother luckily

If you used the navigation function where you load in a route as a set of waypoints and the 305 alerts and navigates you via them, then be aware that this function was taken out of the 500.

If you want a replacement 305 it might be worth contacting Garmin on the off chance they will let you buy a refurb unit at the out of warranty replacement price of which I was quoted £52 (for some reason the amount I was actually charged was actually less than that but can't remember off hand what it was). Maybe if you say the mount was not up to scratch it might be considered a warranty issue.

At the price Handtec are doing the 500 for and assuming you do not need full mapping then I'd be going for one of those.

I have one and it is brilliant. Just works and gives all the data you could ever need and plays nicely with most logging software / websites.

EDIT: @timmys - the 500 does do waypoints etc and does them very well. Couple of recent threads on the subject.

Prices seem to be ex-VAT. When you click on the product it mentiones a VAT and non-VAT price.

Sorry, I might be confused. Whatever model it was that replaced the 205/305 (I thought that was the 500) would only do the "follow the breadcrumb trail" type of navigation, whereas the 205/305 does proper "I'm beeping to tell you a waypoint is coming up and you need to head in direction X".
