Thinking about moving. We have our eyes on one tastey house.
The fact the house has a massive long garage obviously appeals to me.
My current place is like Fort Knox after being stung by pests a year ago.
The house has been owned by a builder so has alarm etc and also has an electric roller garage.
Are these secure.
Currently store expesive bikes in storage in town and then cheap bikes protected by PIR & Door Alarm, Garage Defender and Piri locks. Plus 16mm chain and ground anchor- but this is a pain in the behind. Very secure but bit of an overkill for the value of the bikes currently secured.
So how secure are electric roller garage doors?
Advise always appreciated.
if the motor is the only thing securing the door then you are relying on the strength of the door as your security. would recommend drop bolts with padllocks secured in to the slab or a pair of maglocks with back up power if you're looking for belt and braces.
Well, I've got one too. IMO it's more secure than any up and over because you can't simply bend a corner up for a start. The door itself seems very solid indeed to me. Weather it can be forced up I don't know, but I've just been out and tried to pull it up from the inside by grabbing the roller brackets and I can't shift it at all. And that's with something to hold onto as well. The outside is smooth
The only possible weak spot I can think of is that it's possible to open the door if you're already inside by hitting a button on the controller, if you know it's there and which button it is. When we go away, I knock the power off thar feeds it.
Peter Poddy: Sounds good.
I like the idea that from the outside garage looks normal. Doesn't shout look at me- I'm protecting something valuable.
Matt, the motor doesn't affect our doors security at all it seems. The top roller runs on a seperate track and sort of locks into place when it's closed. It needs to be pulled bacwards to release it, but you won't be able to do that from the outside. I'd go as far to say it's the most secure door in the house by some margin myself
PP, Algore, I've spent many years installing and latterly designing security systems for everything from houses to places i'm not allowed to tell you about. the only thing i can say for sure is that no matter what you do to secure something there is someone out there who is not delayed by any measures you take!! if you are concerned about the security of your property then ask a professional to take a look www.nacoss.org have a list of approved installers and specifiers that offer advice. a bit difficult for me to tell you much more without looking at the door.
Is the Door a sectional ( as in probably 4 panels) or a true roller shutter. Like previous post said if they want it they will get in. Main problem with sectionals is they can easily be jacked up by somone who has time. If it's a true roller shutter then it's not so easy, but I'm guessing they are the former if it's a nice house! Is there a seperate personel door into the garge??
Oh and to reiterate the point of " if they want it" on my sites I've now had two steel clad high security containers broke into! One using the groundworkers jcb to pull the door off, and one with a Stihl saw straight thro the side!
I hate pikey thieves !!!
roller shutter doors are rubbish, i've been fitting them for about 9-10 years now and anything wider than a personnel door is just too flexy and they pop out of the guides each side then flap about in the wind. what you've probably got is overhead sectional doors which are a bit better but not infalible.
as said above, if they want it, they'll get it!!
Not what I wanted to hear. But good to hear it now than 'told you so' one year later. So if this is right property - will need to be more careful. Bikes in spare room etc. Know you can get into anything, But at very least want thieves to think to go elsewhere for easier jobs.
Like I say if there's a personel door you can easily put some locks on inside of garage doors, just by stopping the roller from travelling up the tracks, but it whole heartedly defeats the object of having electric garage doors!!
