Hello, just weighing up some new tyres for a 29er and have been looking at the deals at On One. The Furious Freds look a very good price but am I going to suffer multiple punctures every ride?

I'm not puncture prone as a rule (maybe 2 a year) and fully understand that the FF is a semi-slick and don't expect tremendous amounts of grip.

Your experiences most welcome.

Cheers

FF's are sily light race day only tyres really as the grip is minimal and the tread life is short, Scwalbe also say that they are more puncture prone as they are such light casings (under 400g for a 29er tyre) They will mount tubesless with stans rims so that reduces the punture issues but the beads are also very light weight so can stretch and let go in a sea of latex unexpectedly. For ultra dry race tracks and enduros, they'd be tops, as an every day use item. I'd avoid like the plague. I got rid of mine as although the fulfilled my weight weenie brief they were just too finicky.

Rocket rons on the other hand are ace 29er tyres 520g for a 2.25 that just go really well and grip nicely. The nobby nic 29ers are my tyre of choice at the moment and from Feb, next day tyres will be stocking the 29er rons so you'll be able to get them a bit cheaper.

I have been running race kings on another 29er. They've been fine and I do quite like them but for some reason it 'feels' like I'm not meant to.

I had some Wierwolf LTs too which were great but haven't managed to find any since.

They're the same carcass...

Rons certainly have vastly more tread, which will ward off some punctures, but are essentially the same tyre with some extra lugs, not really any more durable. I run a Furious Fred on the back in summer a lot, they're not durable (nor are Rons), but they are incredibly fast.

Ron/Ron is a far more versatile setup certainly, just don't expect great life out of them.

if a full weight weenie tyre isn't needed the bonty 29-3 specific pairings are fab 2.25 front with the 2.0 rear with little low profile paddles. looks like an odd combo but is tip top and are meant to be run tubeless and at low pressures.
