After not doing the Capital Trail due to a prior commitment I realise I am missing out on having some sort of event to ride/train for.

Is there anything similar or a late Audax or something? Even a mtb marathon. I could do an enduro I suppose.

Well since you said Audax I'll assume you're not going to want to do a Sportive..

But just in case you were interested I'm planning a 'Big Weekend' by driving up the night before for the Ullapool Sportive (Handsonevents) on Saturday 20th September, then driving down to Oban that night for the Oban Sportive (North Argyll Cycle Club) the next day. Both look like excellent routes and the Oban Sportive is nice and small so you can still get your grumpy anti-social Audax kicks ๐Ÿ˜€

Can't remember what the prices are though, definitely a few quid more than an Audax I'd guess.

The Shindig is the 5th/6th I think. It's a good ride, plenty of banter and a bivi

A 200km audax, from Newtonmore, on 29 August. http://www.aukweb.net/events/detail/15-282/
I've not done the current route, but I've done previous versions - plenty of scenic minor roads. Plus the option of a shorter ride on the Sunday.
There's a cheap campsite near the start.
