after riding my exsiting full suspension single speed since 2000 (marin mount vision) i have decided to retire it, to build a better more radical full suspension single speed
I have a whyte preston frame and forks maybe a little heavier than the old mount vision
I think i hear some men in white coats knocking at my door
I always thought that a SS full bouncer wouldn't work due to the chain length increasing and decreasing as the frame moves up and down, however you have now proved me wrong.
There are a few zero chain growth full sus designs. Cove's bike (G-spot?) that used a big bearing around the BB is one.. Kona also produced the 'A' single speed full susser.
i use an old sunn downhill chain tensioner mounted on the bottom brkt,, a bit like a roox rollercoaster
Your link doesn't go anywhere ade ward
opps sorry i'll try again
Hi ade, I remember your Mt V from Cheddar a few years ago, I thought you had it pinched.
no my original preston was stolen
no my original preston was stolen
Was that the one with a 24" front wheel or something strange like that?
Link still doesn't work BTW.
it was the preston with the 24 inch front wheel,,, i have another which i got just after the original,,,, and have recently got another to build the single speed version,, sadly it looks like the mount vision will need to be striped for parts
Crikey, you must have the only first generation Mt V swingarm that hasn't cracked around the torque tube ๐ฏ
i went out on my A for the first time today. Also first proper ride on a full sus! Had a great time. Slightly slower on the ups, aut a real laugh going down ๐ only let down was some conti speed kings, which was the worst front tyre i've ever used... Oh, and the discovery that the nettles have just started to sting bad ๐
pulled apart the quad link preston,,, it needs some love,, all bearings are good but the notchy swinging arm action was down to mud packed around the bearings ,,
removed all the surplus cable stops and the rear mech mount,, so now it is a single speed only
it realy needs some paint but i like the scuffed look so it's due to go back together with the parts from my mount vision ss bike
but with a 24 inch front wheel,, makes prestons handle very well and lowers the front end at the same time..

I could never understand why you did that, I found that my preston would spit me over the bars on the downhills due to the front end tucking under because of the "J" shape axle path, having a smaller front wheel would make it even more likely as far as I can make out. ๐ฏ
in my experience i found my prestons needed more weight on the front end,, std bike was great for wheelies,, but tended to run wide in corners,, lower front end,, more weight on front wheel more grip,
i dont think i have ever been over the front of any of my prestons if something big comes up it's better to get off the front brake and let it ride over ,, thats what those forks do best
in my experience i found my prestons needed more weight on the front end
I tried that with my Preston and have the scar on my face to show for it, after riding on of JW's own PRST4's I went the opposite way and set mine like his, with the front end really soft and the weight all back towards the rear wheel.
i left marin/whyte before the prst4 came out i went back to ride one with Jon , realy liked it but still found it needed more weight on the front,,
if the front is run soft with an air shock then it will be lower and it may have about 50 % sag,, so you are onto the upwards part of the j path, it's the backwards part of the j path that helps the fork take big hits
the 24 inch front works for me, and my riding style ( i know i dont have any style) i would rather have a bike with a front end that will get me to the apex of the turn,, and dont mind a rear end that slides a bit,,

It uses a concentric BB to keep the chain the same length.
