[#3585021]

Looking to build up a full sus 29er, would prefer frame only to build which cuts down options slightly.

Only after 100mm travel, the dream would be a Niner Jet 9 RDO, but I don't think I could stretch the budget to that 🙁

Currently under consideration,
Titus Rockstar
Santa Cruz Tallboy (prob Ali, couldn't stretch to carbon)
Salsa Spearfish (although only 80mm travel)
Vantana El rey

The Intense Spider 29 and Tomac Carbide SL 29 are probably a bit expensive.

AFAIK the Cannondale, Specialized, Trek and Aluminium Scott aren't available frame only?

Not sure when the Orange 5 29er is due (if ever) Any other ideas?

The Spearfish looks great value for money in that company, although the Tallboy would be my choice if I could justify the additional expense. The Jet 9 alloy version is still a great frame/suspension too.

While most of the mainstream brands don't sell frame only, lots of people buy them, strip and sell the components and end up with a much cheaper option than a more prestigiously stickered frame only purchase. You may even find that a friendly LBS will give you a price for frame only. If I were taking this route I'd take a close look at the Specialized Camber.

I was quite suprised how few 29ers you can seem to get in frame only. I was debating one so i could have a FS for Passportes du soleil.

I'll be watching this thread with great interest.

@ bol & Rorschach

I was considering a Scalpel or a Spark and strip down and sell the bits I didn't want.

Have you ever done this and if so how did it work out financially?

Given that a fox F29 fork is £700+ on its own and most fs frames are £1000+ its not too bad a deal if you buy a base model for £2k ish....if you can sell the pretty low rent bits you get with it.

someone on here was moaning that the shock on the rumblefish is very poor

the 29er El Guapo needs to be added to the mix (probably for 2015 knowing On-one 😉 )

I haven't personally, but know people who have. As a rough indication you'd probably end up with frame and fork for the same price as frame only on on of the others (circa £1500). The spearfish, if it's still a grand, would work out at tue same sort of price.

I own a Tallboy so that would, inevitably, be my suggestion

Would also reccommend a Tallboy, love the VPP suspension, very firm when standing and pedalling but still supple on the flat and downs. 18 Bikes have a Large demo bike if you're ever up that way.

The Ventana has just been redesigned, finally. I bought one last spring and was half tempted to wait for the upgraded model which was supposed to be along "in a few weeks". In fact nearer 10 months. Having said that, even at the current price it is still marginally ahead of the alu Tallboy and a year ago was 60% of the price of the carbon Tallboy. My decision was made easier by the Salsa (Spearfish or Big Mama) and Titus being unavailable at the time for various reasons.

The newer model has tapered headtube, 30.9 seatpost and Kashima shock etc. amongst other bits of future proofing but I have no regrets. I really like the Ventana and for the big days out across the moors it is a lot quicker and smoother than the hardtails I had been riding.

Whether it is worth the 600ukp premium on the Spearfish or the Titus at its current price is really up to you.

You definitely after new? I have a large Niner Raw RIP9 frame which I'm looking to sell. I'm looking at getting a bigger bike like the WFO9 for an Alps holiday.
Don't want to derail your post with pics and spam, but if you look through my posting history you'll see lots of pics of it as I love it dearly.
It should be in the classifieds soon enough anyway.

Out of the new options above that you've listed my choice would be the Tallboy. I have a Salsa back at home to and think they are very good value and quality bikes.

@ hugor, I was ideally after new, in any case my Air 9 Carbon is a small so your RIP9 would be a bit big 😀

Turnerfan, where you got the Anthem on order from?

ratadog the Ventana is about the same money as the Tallboy, I've seen some pics on FB which I think were the re designed model, does look very nice and would hopefully be a quality piece of kit? Where did you get your one from?

Hugor, wouldn't it make more sense to just fit an angleset to your RIP for your holls than get a WFO? The RIP has got to still be better for 95% of UK riding. Mine is a lot braver than I am in its standard setup.

The Yeti SB95 from the little I know has a bit more bounce than I was after, I believe it's 120mm?

I was only after 100mm, pity though, have never owned a Yeti but have always liked to 😉

Was talking about an Ibis Ripley last night, luckily I should have some time to save/sell a kidney before they actually get released

Where did you get your one from?

Sorry, been at work all day and only just got back. UK sole agent for Ventana is Riverside Cycle Centre.

They now have a new website up. Their previous one died sometime previously so at the time I bought I dealt with them by email and phone. They were excellent to deal with and although the frame was made to order it essentially took about 10 days from order to delivery despite the time difference meaning that 2 days were spent in communication with the factory (i.e. when can you do one and yes he wants one).

Riverside are in Maldon in Essex so getting there for a test ride was not a goer for me but as it happened the dimensions on Ventana's website were basically identical to a hardtail 29er I was already riding so from my point of view sizing was a safe bet.

Given that clicking on ajr above takes you straight to Riverside's web page I suspect that he's your man.
