Why not? if the kid is riding stuff that could leave him hurt if he crashed then its no different than an adult buying one.
In answer to the original question, a small bell ballistic fits my son (6) perfectly and I will probably be getting one for him before we hit the bike parks this summer.

I have a small unused 661 full face helmet if interested
My son got his first full-face when about 8, after smashing 2 open facers - mashing his face up the 2nd time.
We struggled with size and eventually got him an MX one, along with body armour.
You will just need to try lots on to find the right fit.
