I thought I was OK at setting up my gears but my front derailleur has got to the point where it either won't shift the chain onto the big ring at all, or it throws it over the top and it comes off. It's 105, 10 speed, braze on. It's about 6 years old and it's not obviously damaged. It does look like it might be sitting a little bit high over the chainrings but it's as low as it will go on the mount. Cable and housing are new.
Any suggestions?

Gentle encouragement with a pair of pliers? Used to be done in the open days.

I'd be checking how worn the chain is and if any stiff links...similar with chainring looking for any bent teeth

At only £25 for a new one I'd quickly be losing patience with the old one...

Talk me through how posting that comment made you feel Jordan. Did it make you feel clever? Did you hope to look witty and cool?

OP - first thing I'd check is that the cable is clamped correctly. Wrong side of the bolt will make it next to impossible to set up.

Not much help for Shimano, but SRAM provide an alignment tool for their front mechs, it fits in the cage and locks to the chainring so it can't move at all when you tighten the bolt. When done, you just rotate the chainring backwards and it pops out.

Is it moving freely? Has it been bashed and now a bit squint?

What’s a front derailleur? 😉

A very common thing on a road bike with 105 gearing

I had to fettle a recent-ish ultegra front mech and the whole process was different to how i'd have done it in the past, so have you checked the instructions for your model? (i know, it's an admission of failure to actually read instructions but I sometimes have to do that before MrsP asks why what I said was a 5 minute job has taken me 2 hours)
