Thinking of Blue scar over Xmas with the boy. Can you loop back easily from the bottom of the switchbacks back up to the start ? or are you going all the way back round to the Penhyyd climb ?

Yes.
When you get to the end of those switch-backs and you go past a little wooden fence instead of heading down the hill, turn back on yourself. Be careful because this puts you riding against the flow of the end of Penhydd. Go past the end of Penhydd and you'll reach a fireroad, follow that up.
This is the tricky part, after a while you'll join the fire road off the back of Genesis, this will take you right back to the start of Blue Scar if you want, but if you're saving little legs there's a cut-through that takes you back 'Hitchers and Oysters' it was an offical diversion a while ago, it's not sign-posted or anything, so you'll need too keep your eyes out.

Just turn left at the bottom, left again after a couple of hundred metres and you'll and head up the fireroad on the opposite side of the valley to the original climb. Brings you right up to the start of the DH. It's not quite as soul-destroying for littler legs compared to the usual climb.
