[#11055908]

Sanity check s'il vous plait.

Building up a new frame and the front band on derailleur (remember those?) coincides with/fouls the bottom bottle cage mount. Obvious fix is one of these band on/braze on adapters with the adjustable height + a braze on derailleur.

Have I missed something else obvious please (BTW, 1x is not an acceptable answer 🙄)

TIA

Smaller or larger chainring to move the required mech position? 😉

Top swing or bottom swing mech? Whatever type it is, the other might work.

It's a fairly common problem in my experience (I'm still running a triple!). The first consideration I suppose is whether the degree it limits positioning the mech. is still acceptable (it's usually only a few mm). If not then the adaptor you link to may work; you can also buy band-on adaptors for Direct Mount mechs. that allow a degree of adjustment (although the Problem Solvers ones do seem a bit pricey).

Yeah top swing, largely governed by braze ons... I wanted the chain ring sizes as it's one of those 'new fangled' sub compact jobbies. Ironically, compact (50t) wouldn't have the problem... Tsssk.

I'm gonna try the existing mech, it's about 10mm above the big ring. Might work...

In (other) good news, a 105 r7000 rear derailleur happily copes with 11-40 cassette/sub compact double and I can get big/big-little/little. Just in case... No road/goaty link products required.

Yeah, I've just done this with a standard 50/34 compact and a 11-40T mech with an Ultegra rear mech. I looked at the GRX sub compacts but 105 compact was much cheaper (and available in silver 😊)

Sorry if this is telling you how to suck eggs but as above a bottom swing mech (not bottom pull) will attach lower on your frame and should give you the clearance you need.

Thanks Stevet1 (and for being diplomatic).

I was confusing swing with pull and a low mount/top swing derailleur would probably help with clearance. However, IIRC Road STI's and MTB dérailleurs don't mix. This build will have 11 speed 105 road shifters so I think I need a compatible road front derailleur? Not sure if they come in both top/bottom swing flavours.

I'll give it a go with the current gap and report back. Ta.

Washers between the cage and the seat tube, plus longer bottle bolts (if necessary).

It's a vertical alignment problem, not that one where the mount is in the space between the cage mounts.

Oh aye, missed that.

You can get Jtek shift mates that allow road/MTB mismatches, but the other solutions above are more elegant.

It works! HURRAH! There's about a 10mm gap between the outer cage and the big ring but it doesn't seem to have any negative effect. How I laughed when the left shifter refused to play (this bike is a bitsa so haven't used the shifters for a year or two). Turned out it was one of those nasty Shimano fluffy inner cables gumming up the innards rather anything more fundamental.

Couple of hours then it'll be finished. It's a Camino Al bought in the sale as a just in case spare. I've a lovely custom 853 fillet brazed jobbie to build next which was a pressie to myself after coming off worse in a fight with an XC90...
