Looking to use some kind of old thumbie to operate a 9-speed Shimano on my road bike. Don't ask - flop-and-chop bars
Anyway, can the old Suntour 3600 or suchlike pull enough cable for modern shimano 9-speed mechs?
Too skint/tight to opt for Paul's Thumbies and some barcons.

Unlikely. 8/9/10 speed cassettes are wider than 6 and 7 speed ones.
My guess it would work, but not with one of the gears at one end, ie. you can have biggest or smallest sprocket but not both.

plus some glue and a bit of hairy string.
Might be worth a try- old 7 speed downtube levers working fine(on friction setting) with 9 speed cassette on road bike.
I draw the line at hose clips!

Yes this does work, I have my old marin set up on a turbo trainer with a 6 speed XT thumb shifter set on the friction setting. It's shifting via a shimano 105 rear mech.
