Does such a thing exist?
I want to use a route planner and then upload to my iphone so when I am out running on holiday I can follow the route.
I dont want any amazing functionality, just a map and the ability to see if I am off my predetermined route.

Viewranger will do that but you have to pay for the good maps.
Not sure if you are looking for UK only or elsewhere. In UK I [url= https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/os-mapfinder/id577097874?mt=8 ]the OS MapFinder app[/url] - I think it does what you are looking for, with one caveat being for totally "free" usage you do have to have 3G signal for the maps to appear. I've paid a ridiculously cheap amount - something like £9, compared to buying all the paper maps - to have all of the north of Scotland downloaded so I can use offline. You can also email a GPX to your iPhone, then open/save in the app - or create a new route within the app.
It's free to download, so you can see if it works for you or not.
Sorry usage is for UK and Europe.
