[#4254192]

Hello, looking to have a frame repainted. Frame is currently in Aberdeen and was going to have it powder coated at Finesse on a recommendation but they now want a £110, lively for an old Inbred. Any recommendations elsewhere? I'm in Edinburgh but travel a fair bit, so Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Stirling and Argyll areas all a possibility.

Thanks for any advice.

I think there is a place in Glenrothes that do it, don't remember the name though. Should be Googleable.

Hendersons (Edinburgh) did a decent job on an old steel frame for me - cost about £60 for grit blasting and repainting (not powder coat).

+1 for Hendersons. They blasted and painted a 531 touring frame for me. They've been around for ages and know their stuff.

Place in Glasgow, "re-coat" or something? Did a grand job for me, £30-50 IIRC.

Pentland Powdercoaters. In Edinburgh, behind Ikea. £30. Give them clear instructions about what to mask to it'll be a bit scrappy

PPS is sounding the answer, Finesse had suggested them too. Thanks!

Anyone have any pics of their frames? It'd be nice to see the finishes available.

This was from Chameleon in Renfrew, happy enough with it. Hasn't chipped or owt, gloss went from the top tube quite quick and the fleck isn't instantly noticeable unless you look closely. IIRC it was £70 for frame fork and bars.

Chameleon in Renfrew do my car wheels and are spot on. I think they charge £40 for a frame?

I use ESP in Ruchill - very good job, about £50ish for a frame.

When I was powdercoating my frames I think I used just about every powdercoaters in central Scotland at one time or another! Some were fine. Most were crap. The best and most consistant I used was IPF in Glenrothes. I also used EPS in Glasgow as Ben mentioned and they were pretty good most of time but haven't had anything done for a couple of years.

As others have said, make sure they know what to paint and what to mask. Don't just assume they'll sort it out. Most of the powdercoaters you find on industrial estates are used to doing bin lorry chassis and stuff like that.

As an aside, we now have a full in-house frame finishing facility and as well as doing our own frames we also now paint for others too. We're not doing powdercoat, it's wet-paint only.

@Shandcycles, that's good to know - saves me sending frames down south so much. I had ovens etc for ages that I was given, and tried to get Al at Wheelcraft to start painting, but he wasn't interested even when I offered him the kit for free 🙂

Ben,

we put it off for ages as it's quite a commitment but moving everything in house has been great. We're much more in control now and can turn stuff around much quicker too. Russ our painter is very, very good and likes a challenge, so complicated masks like S&S couplers and shiny stainless stuff he eats for breakfast. We've been doing some restoration work too and can match graphics and logo setc...

Cheers

Interesting, I have a really nice steel frame lovely cut out lugs, but paint is a bit tired. Have a new race bike now that fits slightly better, old frame 54cm

It has tange tubing. Anyone know what these frames are worth, would it be worth getting it resprayed a neutral colour or just try and sel as is.

It's currently pearl fluorescent pink. Yes those crazy 80's.

Unless it's a really well-known and desirable make like a Hetchins, it's probably not worth much - the couriers seem to pick up decent old road frames for £50 at most.
