[#2927884]

My well-used Giant XTC frame recently developed a big crack at the TT/ST weld, which is sadly terminal. Up until now it's been used as a rigid singlespeed for winter duties but also for a few races (Thetford so no rocks or climbing to worry about). I like the idea of putting gears back on (1x9 maybe) for some more racing but it will first and foremost be my winter/local bike so I don't want anything too tarty. (I have a Soul for trail centre/Peaks/Dales trips)

Something like a Scandal with swapouts would be tempting, but it could be a while until they're available - any other suggestions in the meantime?

I have a Scandal with sliding dropout and it makes a great ss. If you can find one.

Salsa ala carte with flop outs.
I am familiar with the 29er equivalent the el mariachi. And it's very nice. http://salsacycles.com/bikes/ala_carte/

There are several Wanga frames on ebay - sliding paragon dropouts for switching between gears and SS.

+1 for the salsa el mariachi or ala carte, they are ace to ride, fairly cheap and not too blingy

Aha, the Whyte looks like just the job, thanks! Doubly annoying that they don't do them frame only though, looks like it's time to start trawling ebay ๐Ÿ™

Tempting, but I'd be after the alloy version - another steel frame would be too similar to the Soul. While I've got your attention though, what height are you to ride the medium? I'm probably borderline between M/L at just over 6'.

Ahh, Mark just realised you are the OP.

You know these swapout things sound great but on one sliding drop outs work perfectly with gears or ss. Me and bish had a chat the other day an reckon all bikes should be made that way, no cons in my opinion.

Cheers

MrGreedy, I'm 6ft. The Medium was borderline for me.

Cheers messiah, sounds like it might be worth swinging a leg over to make sure.

Ian, I've been trying to resist reading about Jon's Whippet too. Scary number of On-Ones in the club now! You running yours SS for Kielder yeah? ๐Ÿ˜‰
