Hi,

I've got myself a nice new Ghost 6500 Ltd Ed.

As my last aliuminium frame eventually got chipped, scratched and shabby, I'm considering putting on some of this frame protection tape that seems all the rage.

Do I need it? Am I being a bit of a fuss pot?

Matt

I'm just about to get a new carbon fs bike also so I have two questions
1. Do I need the frame tape for a carbon bike?
2. Are there any companies that do the covering professionally?
Thanks.

You don't "need" the tape, it just helps protect from scratches.

Am I being fussy?? Yes but its your bike do what you want.

A company that does it professionally?? its just thick sticky tape

IMO its worth protecting the bits where cable rub could happen - surprising what damage it can do. Otherwise no, it's a mountain bike - the sooner it gets a few scratches and dings the better then you can stop being precious about it (I was exactly the same).

Basically, it's a £20 outlay now in exchange for a £100+ gain when you sell the bike.

Not sure I can think of an investment that pays better interest than that.

look for cable rub areas, had 3 flat spots on my heckler frame from that. Also worth doing chain stays/seat stays though I normally wrap these in inner tubes to quieten chain slap and rock hits.

Down Tube is a good area and top tube where your legs rub.

Buy direct most mtb suppliers have massive mark-up on what is a £10 roll of tape

Heel rub can do some damage - although it depends on the position and size of your feet - I've noticed it on some of my bikes but not on others. The drive side stay will normally be wrapped up anyhow to stop chain slap, but worth checking you're not getting any heel abrasions on the non-drive side.

Let it rub..... Scars are part of mountain biking. And money isn't the point of everything. Nor are looks.

I've never considered the future selling price when I buy something new. I suppose I must be doing something wrong.
I quite like my bikes to show use, why would you want it to look new for ever

I don't know why I would care if my mountain bike looked new or not. At some point I WILL sell it and upgrade/sidegrade/try something new. If I spend £10 and an hour of my time now, I get back a big upgrade on the next bike.

Happy to have the scars on my legs thanks.

Until you have flat spots in the actual metal of the frame....

When I stripped the last heckler I was glad it was heading to the skip having taken a good look over it

One of the stays on my Pitch has some pretty serious rub, looks like it could definitely have weakened it. Not had a problem though.

cable, foot, shorts rub, stone chips, I think it's a good idea as it will help prolong the life of your frame.

For 20 minutes and a few pounds it worth it in my opinion. just built a my new SC and used this stuff from a ebay shop called convertape.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/360383674689?var=630017993252&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649

Really impressed with the quality, good thickness with a good bit of give in it for getting a good fit and I thought pretty reasonable on price.

Go to B&Q
They have basically the same stuff marked up as wall repair tape.

I like to look after my bikes too, but I don't use heli tape as it picks up crud around the edges and looks rubbish after a while. I just use electrical tape the same colour as the frame, which in my case is either white or black. It just stops cable rub which looks crap in photos at selling time.
