Got taken out by a skier and fractured sternum in Sunday. Still in hospital.
Anyone else had this misfortune? How long before you were back at work, back on bike and back to fitness?
Yes, courtesy of some idiot at an EWS, pretty much 12 months ago now who decided to stop in front of me in a high speed section.
I broke my collar bone down by my sternum, fractured my shoulder and broke my top 3 ribs too. So made a right mess of myself.
Mostly healed other than some compications which will need an operation around my collarbone dislocating. It's been a painful 12 months.
Don't know the answer to that ..but a good few months by the look of things ...
Best Wishes.....hope you make a full recovery ..however long it takes.
Did mine playing American football when I was 18, most painful injury I've ever had. Couldn't lie on my front for 2 years afterwards and has left my chest lopsided. Commiserations OP, hopefully yours won't be as bad
I have mine opened up completely with a huge surgical saw, when I had heart surgery.
meer flesh wound
MTFU...............ย ;o)
Unfortunately yes after someone decided to remodel my car whilst I was driving it.
I was in hospital for about 4 days but a lot of that was waiting for an appointment for heart ultrasound before they let me go home. My boss made me take 2 weeks off work before doing a week of half days as the pain killers I was on knocked me out a bit (which was useful as I was having to try sleep sitting up). I work at a desk though so not much moving around/lifting & shifting, if the painkillers hadn't left me a bit foggy I could probably have gone back to full days after those couple of weeks.
I wasn't able to do much for about 4 weeks before starting to go for gentle road rides, it was about 6 weeks before I started riding my MTB.
I did it in mid May and a quick look back on social media suggests I was back to normal activities (riding and climbing) around the beginning of August, albeit slower. Can't quite remember when I would have said I was back to full fitness as it was a few years ago.
Hope you heal quickly, and don't watch anything that will make you laugh for a while.
People usually report the pain being bad for the first week before dropping off to something more manageable. Without complications you should expect a fairly useable callous to have formed after six weeks, meaning that you should be able to do most stuff but may well be advised to avoid activities that risk refracturing the injury site (e.g. contact sports etc). Completely healed after twelve weeks, also barring any complications.
Feel free to let the pain guide you to a certain extent, it's going to be sore whatever you do but if it's REALLY painful then stop!!
If you smoke you can add at least 20% onto the healing time, so maybe a good time to stop if you do!! ๐
