Just read this on pinkbike
http://m.pinkbike.com/news/fox-files-voluntary-recall-of-certain-float-x2-shocks.html
Anyone know any more? Do they actually blow up or is it just that they've not put a sticker on there? Surely if that were the case they'd advise not to run more than 250 rather than to stop using them immediately.. Any idea what they're planning to do?
Interested in this too. Must be so something to do with the sealing.
I'll be giving mojo a call tomorrow, whatever I hear I'll post up. I'm sure theyll be issuing a response soon.
Me too. Mine's a 2016.
I don't understand how something like this could happen. I thought Fox Suspension were the undisputed kings of quality control?
I would expect it's a mix of very high leverage ratio frames and peoples obsession with volume tuning stuffing.
Could well be pigyn. Must require alot of force to blow up an alu air can though!
Some info appearing, apparently something to do with air cans undoing. I did think it was a bit easy to unscrew when I removed the volume spacers...
Everyone phoning Fox is being told to stop using immediately! Good job I've got a broken collarbone and can't ride anyway, I'd not be impressed otherwise. But hey, maybe we'll even get a new shock out of it!
Interesting to find out what they say as mine appears to be one of the sticker less ones
They say its applicable to those shipped on or before Sept 9th and don't have a sticker.
So does that just mean you can carry on if your don't put more than 250 psi in it ?
Seems nothing to do with pressure, just the air can can come undone
Spoke to a very nice friendly lady at Mojo who I suspect is drowning under a deluge of phonecalls. They don't have details yet on how it's all going to work.
I've just spoken to the same lady, if you read this don't bother ringing, I think they're having a bit of a nightmare in there!
Basically all they know is what is on the PB article. Keep an eye on their Facebook for updates
Yeah, seems like they were caught unawares - Fox themselves haven't even got anything on their site., it's just on Pinkbike. Must be a nightmare for them.
And I think Chris Porter is away with Chainline from on here riding bikes in Basque country. 🙂
I've spoke to CP this morning , they are flat out with phone calls on it. Statement says to stop using the product there is no current plan of action from fox. Mojo know as much info as to what is online in the press release. I for one will carry on using my shock. Make of this what you will.
That's the only thing Fox can say, really - they'd be liable if they said "carry on using it" and something did happen.
I'd be annoyed with Fox just dropping this overnight and giving their distributors no information
Hmmmm my air can came undone, but not enough to pop off, the air valve part rubbed against the piggyback housing..
Would of been good for Fox to prime the dealers and service agents.
Off to Italy (Molini) next week, convenient timing !
ive had mine since march?! riding it a fair bit and ive not died
I know its a safety precauction etc etc and they don't want to liable if something happens
but until theres a fast solution then ill be riding mine, I only have one bike so its a real issue for me, ive done so for 6 months with no issue so cant really see other than covering themselves its a massive problem on mine
The air sleeve unscrewing is imho not the reason.
If i had to put money on it I think they have had problems with the outer air sleeve cracking when running 300psi and a full load of spacers.
As i'm a 65kg racing snake, and i run 150psi in my X2, and i spent all summer smashing the c**p out of the shock round the Alps without issue, i'm just gonna tape my air can to stop it turning (and hence releasing) and keep on riding!
Yup, me too. There is nothing a bit of duct tape cant fix 🙂
turning?! ive not touched mine in 6 months full stop!!! it hasn't worked loose or shown any sign of it......
the only time its come apart is by someone else when the climb switch was retrofitted, and again not touched since
Mojo are clearly waiting to hear more thenselves.

Riders can check to see if their shocks are included in the recall by looking for a “250psi max” label directly under the air valve. If no label is present, the shock is subject to this recall.
So they are intending to fix it with a label then.
Send it to us and we will stick you a nice safe label on...so if it blows up in the future its nothing to do with us 🙂
I think it's simply a way of identifying the batches affected.
How can you be so uncynical !!!!!!
Oh dear - mine seems to be missing the relevant text.
I'm meant to be racing this weekend. I raced DH last weekend on it which included some hideous big stepdowns to flat & it's still in one piece. Think i'll risk it for a Mini Enduro!
surely the best thing for fox to do would of been to put out a press release with the solution. not just dont ride the shock and wait for an announcement.

It's very clearly a "covering our arses" announcement - they can say they told you not to ride it now.
Probably not gonna work but pics of a failure:

Loose air cans, where did that come from?
The issues highlighted in the article.
FOX has learned that under certain conditions, some bicycle FLOAT X2 shock absorber air sleeves can rupture due to the increase in internal air pressure
and again
What’s wrong with the Float X2 shock?
a. “FOX has learned that under certain conditions, some Float X2 shock absorbers air sleeves can rupture due to the increase in internal pressure which occurs during shock absorber compression
Which occurs as a result of it beginning to pop open apparently.
I think that shock is a couple of spacers over the maximum.
...or others suggest it's just because there's no max 250psi sticker and people have been putting too much air/spacers in there. Doubt that's the case though, unlikely they'd tell consumers to stop using immediately in the latter case.
We know what happens. We can all read. The debate is why/in what circumstances

Yep - I count seven, I understood the max was 5
Funny how it's referred to as a recall, but there is no actual recall in place.
It's a notice not to use the X2; and they'll get back to you sometime. Maybe. No rush.
I nearly got an X2, glad I went with the CCDBA CS instead.

A couple more and you'd get a hardtail.
Max is 7 in a 70mm metric shock. Not sure what the one in the pic is
Agree on the 'recall'. It's not a recall until they tell you how they're going to fix the thing!
So if I was leaving for a riding holiday tomorrow how does that work? If I ride it it'd probably be fine I'm sure but if it did blow up Fox would deny any responsibility. If I don't ride it I either rent a bike, buy a shock or cancel the holiday, costing me £100s either way?
They can't have enough in stock to replace every single one either surely?
Looks like an Enduro in the pic - so max is either 2 (2.25") or 3 (2.5")

They also said in the press release that this recall would not affect the financial results, if it was going to be a full replacement of all shocks sold that would definitely have an affect....
That shock with the 7 spacers is ridiculous....i made a post on here a few years ago now where i stated that if a shock is needing the buyer to retro-fit spacers to get it working properly then its probably not fit for purpose and should go back to the manufacturer or at the least off to a specialist to be properly tuned....
....needless to say i was criticied for it and told how i was a neanderthal and how tuning with spacers was the best thing since sliced bread etc etc....
Amatuers with no clue about suspension tuning should leave well alone and i include myself in there, i've always used TF-tuned but other firms are available.
I've seen too many well intentioned idiots out on the trail with too much air in the shock or as in the case pictured above too many spacers...it goes without saying that the shock doesnt work and the bike rides like crap....instead of going back to the beginning and buying a shock with the correct tune or sending their existing one off for tuning they add yet more air or spacers!
MTBers seem to love a good tinkering but suspension is one of the dark arts that even fully paid up pros in motorsport often get confounded by...but your average MTBer seems to think he/she is a tuning god because RS and Fox have given them the ability to bung a load of crap in there in an attempt to get it working close to properly....i dont get it?!?!
My weight often fluctuates between 12st and 15st depending on what time of year it is, what other sports i'm doing at the time, whether i'm lifting weights or not etc...but i've never felt the need to take apart my suspension or add spacers and so forth, i set the sag anywhere from 20%-30% depending on what kind of ride i'll be doing and how plush i want it and then i ride...never bottomed it out, blasted through the travel or any other problems i often hear about and i've used RS, Fox and X-Fusion in recent years with the same good results....my riding has been in the fairly flat South East and laterly rocky and mountainous Wales, what exactly are poeple doing that they need to add 7 spacers to what should be a premium shock?!
Rant over but that pic of the X2 with 7 spacers is everything thats wrong with MTBing at the moment...bizarre.
To be fair it doesn't look like there is actually any room left for air in that air can!
2/10 for the rant by the way, no improper use of capitals, not enough exclamation marks and the spelling seems good.

Congratulations, 99% of your post is absolute guff.
