[#526880]

Just got myself a Marin Mount Vision 5.8 - seems to be a very nice bike but the back end is a bit bobby - compared to the Giant Trance 1 it replaced - that moved but I couldn't feel it that much when climbing...gone another 20mm either end and I can feel the bike moving as I climb. My pedal stroke is smooth (but not perfect) but certainly not a mashing of the pedals.

On the Giant, I was running 180psi in the RP3 shock...the new bike has 180psi and the propedal is set on 3 (firm). I suspect I don't have enough pressure in but when doing the sit on the bike and check sag test, it appears to be spot on - about 12mm.

So can I get some tips on setting the bike up - looking at the Fox site, the picture of the RP23 shows the valve on the opposite side of the shock to the thing on my bike...so I'm not 100% clear which way ProPedal is on or off (I'm assuming lever to the left is on).

I'm 11.5 stone and 6'1" so not a heavyweight but I'm wondering what I need to do to try and reduce the amount of bobbing the bike does whilst climbing - I climb seated,

Any advice/tips would be appreciated...I don't want to loose the smoothness of the bike on the descents as yesterdays descent was about twice as fast as I've ever gone!

Slow the rebound down. pro pedal on is to the left as you look at the adjusters. Set at 1/3 of the stroke in sag, how many times have you ridden it ? bottomed it out ?

Cheers for the reply...will slow the rebound down and see how that goes. I can't tell if I have bottomed it out, but I don't think I have...perhaps very close to it though - the wee rubber ring thing was almost at the very end of the shock so I know it was close.

I just can't tell if this ProPedal thing is doing anything though, I think that is where my confusion is coming from - air pressure I think is about right, but the propedal seems to make diddly squat difference to the movement of the suspension - I'd have thought it wouldn't bob as much climbing with it on as it does with it off - but it appears to be the same...I've also got the pro-pedal setting on 3 which I think is Firm so I'm just wanting to know if I've missed something or not set it up properly.

Went out on it again last night and it was better - the ride of the bike is very different to the TRance so it takes time to adjust...the climbing on Monday was pretty grim (aside from the bobbing) but last night the climbing was a bit more controlled and not as wiggly - those bars are seriously wide.

Thanks for the suggestion, will keep having a play and see if slowing the rebound down will help (will that not them make it ramp up and packed down (or something) when it comes to riding big bumps repeatedly?

Have you set the pressure to your "full" weight, this includes all your riding kit including all your drink, tools, shoes and helmet.

I believe so...but will check again tonight just to be sure...saying that, I think I weigh a half stone more with all my riding kit on - I don't tend to wear much more than I need and my riding bag has minimum essentials...the water is probably the heaviest bit.

It's absolutely no use just setting the same pressure as your last bike. All bikes are different, all shocks are different (leverage ratio, spring curve, weight distribution etc). You need to set the sag properly before you do ANYTHING else. The amount of sag to use should be in the bike manual, but 20-25% is a good starting point if not. 1/3 (33%) is too much.

I have used a method: calculate your weight in lbs = PSI plus 25% i.e. 200lbs(200psi) + 25%(50lbs=50psi) =250 psi.

I adjust back from there.

it could be its just a more bobby bike. The meastro set up on giants is very good and has very little bob. You may have just been spoiled ๐Ÿ™‚

But as PeterPoddy says that's totally different between different bikes - on my Meta for example that pressure would be much too high.

Reading the manual and checking the sticker on the bike, ideal sag (for firm setting) is 12.5mm - I'm looking at 12mm sag with my 180psi, so I think I've got that bit sorted...I just need to get the ProPedal bit sorted.

Talking to a mate at work, he made a very valid point that I forgot about - most of my climbing was done in the bottom ring, so it would be a fairly active ride...I'll need to repeat the climb but in my middle ring to see if it is unaffected...this could of course be the whole reason why it was bobbing - granny ring instead of middle ring...

also take a look at the shock, particularly on the sticker for the compression tune, if it's the shortest one then propedal's effect is reduced - i had the same feeling as you when i first got my 5, but it got better once i had setup the sag properly at 20-25% of stroke ( which is not the same as the length of the shaft ). you'll sort it.
