[#4189326]

Im looking at a new rear shock for my giant trance was set on getting the 2012 rp23 factory, boost valve (184x44) at £379,

Obviously we now have the 2013 models coming out and the size i require is only available without the boost valve, (although it has got the new CTD thingy which im not bothered about as im not buying the ctd forks and seat post) but its cheaper at only £329.

Why is the new model cheaper and what should i go for? im running a 2012 fox float 140mm (kashima rlc ect ect) fork and its a size medium 2012 trance x4 frame.

I've just put a Factory 2012 RP23 with all the trimmings on my 2008 Patriot - it's blown me away, to be honest. Makes me realise I need to fettle more with the Double Barrel I took off, coz right now the RP23 feels as good, and I'm pretty sure it shouldn't. RP23's a great shock - just hope it lasts ok. 2013 is a bit lighter I think, but I wasn't bothered because the 2012 already saved me 1.5 pounds over the CCDB.

I had a 2012 which I didn't like so I sold it, I've now got a CTD and love it!...my one cost me £380 so if you can one for 330 grab it!

Interesting that, Paul - how's the 2013 different?

My 2012 was wallowy, to get it to feel right I had to have the sag set up at about 5%...it turned out the air can was too large for my setup so it needed a spacer put in ect....not really the shocks fault but in the end i just wanted it off the bike so sold it and put a 2010 RP23 on. The 2013 one is right for my bike/weight and works faultlessly.

Interesting, that. I must have got lucky in terms of bike/set-up/ratios/my weight etc. My 2012 feels great, although I had been half expecting that wallowy feeling people talk about. First ever air shock for me, after about 15 years on coils.

this is the first ive heard of the previous model feeling wallowy so more research is needed. the stock giant shock will do for a little longer but im starting to push its limits now.

Reckon it probably depends on the bike. No wallow on mine and I know loads of other single pivot Orange riders who love that shock on their Alpine 160s, Fives etc.

Hang on, he's already said it was because the air can was too large.
Just make sure you get normal air can (and the right shock tune).

air shock was "wallowy" so you spent £380 on a new shock instead of £14.99 for the volume reducing kit?

ooooooookkkkkkkkkkk

I didn't spend anything on the air spacer actually Phil, Mojo sent it for free as I'm a nice guy.
Obviously I haven't gotta justify myself to you but I've got no work on today so I'm bored.
I bought the shock for my old zesty which it was fine on, then I got my Ibis and transfered the RP23 to that as the eye to eye was the same and so was the stroke...I must admit at that time I wasn't an expert on air can sizing like you probably are but it's nice to learn new stuff. So I had to send the shock off twice for a retune and £40 quid ish each time so the cost was starting to spiral and I still wasn't happy with it. I decided to sell the thing, which I got a good price for and get a 2013 which was tailored specifically for my Ibis and my weight, riding style ect....

There you go Phil...Hope that's ookkkkkkkk with you.

Paul

Its all marketing bullshit. Every year they bring out something "better", its just a clever way of making you think you need to buy the newer version when really you are just wasting your cash.

Didn't say you had to jusitfy it, you obviosuly don't mind paying that kind of money to sove the problem. myself, i would of bought the volume space reducer kit for the high volume can and fettled with it to get it right.

as above, i really can't see there being that much deiifrence between a 2012 and a 2013 rear shock in turns of damping, other than the CTD switch.
