my brother is thinking of buying a pair of vanillas/floats and due to the current prices thinking of the r model rather than rlc, he doesnt use his lockout so that
wont be missed but how good is the preset compression damping? never had forks that you cant adjust so cheers for any info/thoughts!
If he's thinking of the vanillas I would just go for the R's - I have the RLC ones (3 years old) and I don't really muck about with the adjusters. Don't really even use the lockout. These bits have just been an extra faff when servicing them to be honest. However, that is just my opinion. No doubt others of a more fettly bent would disagree! You can't really go wrong with vanillas as long as you get the right spring for your weight put in them. The shop should do this for you if they need changed from new but it's quite easy with the right tools. You get 3 different springs with them. I would recommend them, great forks.
