In my slightly heavy handed attempt to change the pads, I pinged off a small piece of metal from the end of the bolt through that pins the pads in place. Is this just there to stop the bolt undoing itself?

Awesome, in that case a cable tie should (as always) solve things nicely

I use mine without the pin....the bolt has never dropped out.

You'll be lucky to get a cable tie around it. I wouldn't bother.
