No apologies for yet another post re: my planned frame purchase:-)

Just after some advice/opinions regarding fork options for an Orange Five. Depending on which existing bike I raid for parts & what gets swapped around etc., I have a choice of the following forks:

RS Revs 130mm U-turn (coil spring)
Pace RC41's
Fox Vanilla 32's 140mm

Strangely enough, they all have the same axle-crown length (which is allegedly the same as the OE fork options for the Five).

By default, I'd probably just put the Vanilla's on, but given my local trails (steep ups), I'm wondering if the RC41's might be an idea, so that I can quickly lower the front. As I quite like the feel of coil forks, I'd fit the Revs, but they really suit the bike they're on at the mo., so moving them over would be a last resort.

Has anyone got, or tried, a Five with RC41's? (just wondered if they'd feel a bit weedy for the frame?)

I really liked the feel of the Fox Float 32's that come as standard so i'd probably go for the Vanilla's from the above. However i've just purchased some Pike's to put on mine as friends have raved about them and i do like the bolt through idea.

Also i wasnt that bothered about the Fox's not having a lock out on them but that might be a consideration for you.

Fox 32RLC on mine - tbh I don't really use the lockout, only on fire road climbs - I got them as a free upgrade though -)

ive had rc41's and ridden a 5, i reckon they would be a bit weedy for it. from the test ride i had i dont think you need an adjustable fork for climbing unless you are going for a 160mm fork. get something bolt thru and get the maxle rear end. nnyyyyeeeowwwwwmm!

Unfortunately, tho I'd love a 15/20mm bolt thru fork, I'm stuck with QR's, 'cos that's all I can use with my vans internal bike rack - can't afford a new fork anyway:(

However, i did notice that Orange do a maxle option on the frame only - and I've just realised my Hope hubs are convertible (oh yes!). 'Scuse my ignorance here, but is the maxle 12mm diameter 135mm long? How do they work, is it effectively just a big threaded bolt? - & are they a PIA when fixing punctures?

Ive had Fox 32 Talas, Fox 36 Talas, Fox 32 Float and now Fox 36 Floats.

This is my new revised opinion but you don't need travel adjust even with the 36's. You modify your riding a bit when climbing but the front end only really lifts on the very steepest stuff, plus if you haven't got it you can't spend half of every ride buggering around with it.

If you're on Pro IIs surely the CRC Vanillas are a no brainer!

Good to know that. I def. agree with the buggering around scenario! IMO, I prefer the Pace/DT 'knock down' travel adjust to the wind-wind of the RS and Talas - 'cos the amount of times I've got to the top of a climb and forgot to unwind the fork. Last time I did this was on the descent off Stanage Edge on a 6" travel bike with forks wound down to 70mm - heelllllp ๐Ÿ˜ฏ

Treated myself to some Pro3 AM-SP4's with Flow rims a couple of weeks back (just couldn't resist!), er...which is another reason I've got to recycle a fork off a current bike.

Arghh, just the thought of the new 5 frame in 'fools gold' with black Vanilla's and fat rimmed Pro3's on it....oooerr...gonna have to lie down in a darkened room.
