So the technical manual for my rockshox forks states that 15W and 5W oil are required for servicing. I've got some Castrol 15W however when looking at 5W there's variants listed online such as W5-30 and W5-40. Which variant/viscosity is best for forks when the manual merely states 5W?

Ideally you want Rockshox 5w, or an equivalent viscosity (not all oils listed as 5w are equal in this regard).

There is a chart there if you scroll down which lists Rockshox 5w and its viscosity. I went out and bought Torco RFF 7 which is essentially the same thing, and has worked fine.

Plenty of people use slightly different oils in their forks with no adverse effects, so if you've got something close lying around then that might do the job.

^that. PVD link is very useful. For damping duties, it's the centistrokes that matter.

I used this Stendec Fork Fluid from CRC for the damper and lowers service on my Fox 36's Comes in a variety of weights and like Ronseal it does what it says on the tin ๐Ÿ˜€

That's all really useful, thanks! I'll use that to help source the 5W. The rockshox/torco 5W shows values of 42.8 and 10.4 at the 2 temperatures, the Castrol I've already bought has values of 46.5 and 8.3, I figure this won't make a huge difference?

Your Castrol will be fine viscosity wise - some might say you have to be a bit careful with motor oil if that's what it is as the additives can attack seals etc.

I just use the cheap rock oil from CRC, never been an issue. That stendec linked above would be perfect.

It's motorcycle fork oil so I should be good on that, not a bad price either rather surprisingly

Motorbike fork oil is always quite well priced compared to mountain bike fork oil. The subject has come up before... ๐Ÿ˜†

So long as you're pretty close and the oil you're using has good anti-cavitation properties, you're probably fine. You might even prefer it if you spot a slight difference!

Indeed. 1.5l of trails bike fork oil for less than the price of 150mls of Rockshox/Fox own stuff...hmmm
