why do some forks have the mounts facing rearwards & others have them facing forwards?
What's the pros and cons of this?

Forward facing makes more sense to me because if anything dangles into the spokes it’ll be pushed out rather than pulled in. Maybe rear facing is used for different effects on handling, dunno.

Yea, it must impact on the handling. I take your point about snags too.
