Are these essential, i changed my forks today from one bike to another, i have a Chris king headset but before i had fork spacers between the headset and stem but now due to steerer length the stem sits on the Chris king headset, it doesn't look like its affecting it but do i need to put a spacer in and get a smaller stem?

No - you don't need a spacer.
