So after not riding much for ages and not servicing my forks for 6 months I decided to do a lower service. To my surprise the oil was jet black and the stanchions are showing a lot of wear. The wear patches are smooth with no ridges etc but is it the seals that are knackered or just the stanchions worn so much they are letting in water etc?

Well I'd be looking at replacing the seals. The worn stanchions may allow water/dirt to get in easier so I'd suggest dropping the lowers and cleaning the seals more regularly. The worn stanchions shouldn't be a major issue...bit more stiction maybe but they'll work
That's reassuring to know I wasn't sure if they were f##ked. Thanks
One thing I will add is check if the bushings in the lowers look worn. If they are worn you might get some play in the forks. If its all fine, great but do service the seals regularly or dirt getting passed the seals will wear down the bushings
That wear in the top pic is right through the anodising. You can replace the seals & oil but really that's a new CSU you need. You can run them but don't expect them to last or feel great.
