Fording water - let's see it

It's rained a bit where I ride.  Fording water was a common theme for our riding this weekend.  I'm still annoyed I didn't catch any video of the hilarity and jeopardy involved.  The group decided NOT to attempt this one.  (There's 2 bridges under there somewhere, over a river and a canal)...

Let's see some water based antics from your weekend.

Somewhere on the Ebro Delta after having been to look at flamingos and riding along the beach for a few km.

Flooded rivers in the UK are likely to contain raw sewage, personally I'd avoid.

I thought it was the same when it came to the sea.

Mate in Brighton doesn't go in the water anymore.

I've refined my technique in recent weeks as our region seems to be a low priority for the Environment agency to manage flooding.

I prefer to pick a low gear, unclip Left foot and raise it out of the way while putting the right pedal at about the 12:00 posiiton and when the water slows me down a bit I can do a 1/4 turn ratchet back and crank again thing to just keep rolling.

I have also tried plowing straight on through just turning both pedals, which obviously means potentially wetter feet.

Flooded rivers in the UK are likely to contain raw sewage, personally I’d avoid.

I seldom lick my tyres after a ride, especially after splashing about in floods.

Down here its like the sea. There is only water. No land left. Think I'll but a boat.

I'm not sure that the EA budget is enough to control all possible precipitation scenarios

I WON'T ride through a ford - surface will be far too slippery. I do however ride through lightly flooded roads. Had one on Saturday that was almost up to the BB. I ALWAYS ride in the middle of the road so as to 1) avoid potential potholes and 2) it's likely to be the shallowest part. But not fords; that algae has had a long time to grow.

Ah. Water. Festive 500 2020. This is a road.

This is also a road
https://flic.kr/p/2kk4nBT

Both I rode through and then once home had to strip bearings all the way up to the fork crown.

This is going through some ruts that escalated quickly atop mynydd maen.

And this is my buddy JB taking a header on a byway that runs down the hill then across the brook and out the other side.

I think I’ve cleaned that section maybe 25% of the times I’ve tried it.

Not been up to the lakes for a while but there was an optional river crossing near Hodge Close quarry I think that had a downhill approach. Made it across about 1 time in 10 back when we used to ride there regularly. Anyone know it, and better still got a photo?

If it's gone when I post, it reappears if I go back to edit

streamcrash

Beckoned on by a waiting photographer. 2006 IIRC. Chest still hurts a bit when it's cold. I landed well up the opposite bank.

Tarr Steps about 20 years ago.

Skoda on our side with it's bonnet up.

4 wheel drive turns up ,surveys the crossing and then drives through much to the excitement of all in attendance.

AA recovery appears on the other side, drives straight through , hitches ups skoda and drives back to the far side.

Mr 4 wheel drive appears again on far side  and drives through. Every one  knew he had cheated us and was a complete prick.

This is me after the swim

Wow, that's pretty flooded.
I know Traitors Ford well and it's usually really shallow. 😬

Sensible from @Rich_s up there, inflating the bouyancy jacket before trying

(or, if that's full of "gunz" then please, please accept my apology)

Kayak23 I’d been through it without incident a few days earlier, it swept the bike out from under me, I stood up on the slimey slab and the water knocked me off my feet. The bike was floating off down the stream and I had to swim after it. Amazingly I was dry under the goretex active jacket, and rode on another 20 miles. Garmin lived on as did DI2 but sadly the rear mech died a couple of weeks later.
