[Closed] Force Double Tap stopped tapping :-/

[#11250881]

... conveniently on the biggest uphill of my commute. One moment I was trying to tap into easier gear and next second it went all way down to the hardest.
Bit of grunting and pushing and I made it but I fear it might be truly dead.

Will push mech into some easier gear than 11T for returning leg home but just thinking...

Is that something typical for Double Taps to fail after about month of using from new? Had non-hydraulic Forces before and they are still going absolutely fine on my other, lesser bike...

Cheers!
I.

My Rival's been pretty reliable. The front's started jamming occasionally but googling suggested the mechanism is sensitive to sticky cables so should be an easy fix.

Sounds more like it's lost all cable tension? Cable snapped or the mount in the lever has failed somehow?

Same with my mechanical Force, good as gold.

Not sure what happened, but lever seems to be just not picking up anything. It is clicking but quieter than normal and not pulling cable at all.

Will check it at home, as cable still have tension at the end of rear mech.

Just though it might be something like known issue. Might be I'm just unlucky...

Cheers!
Seb

I had a similar problem, turns out it was this.

It was the final straw for me, got rid and bought a Shimano group.

For balance I've had the head of the cable pull through the shiftier of a Dura Ace STI, 💩 happens.

Are you sure the cable hasnt just come loose in the mech?

Has happened to me before on an xt rear mech as it was under tightened.

I'll give it a check before ride back home, for sure.

Linky looks to be borked...

I'm on 1:1. Rear ST-5600 stopped pulling cable and now Force also refused cooperation.

I like the feel of SRAM brifters, hence I left Shimano behind.

It will be the cable spool inside the shifter. The cable head retention slot shears, and the cable drops out. I spent ages last year fabricating a new one in a 3d printer, which worked quite well for a time.

My failure mode was caused by a lack of a full-length outer. Occasionally, this lack had been causing a sticky shift when the going was gungy. This in turn let the cable head slip out of the slot momentarily, and then it was suddenly rammed against the thinner part of the slot when the shifting re-engaged. Over time this had developed a small crank which ended up in complete failure.

SRAM don't sell this as a replaceable unit, and didn't want to know about it as I'd bought the bike second hand.

I bought it new and it seen only about month of use. Just don't remember where I bought it from, as bot front and rear were - I think - from separate ebay sellers. One might have been Wiggle, so I will try to get back to them to see what they can do about it. If that was the one that failed...

Regards!

Just an update. Had no tension on cable so looks like it would be what you suggested codybrennan

Will give it actual in-depth check once I'm into my off days, Friday.

Quick question to These that Knows. Is it possible to retrofit bit in question from any other Double Tap shifter? One that is shagged in a different way and can act as a donor if SRAM is not providing actual spares?

Cheers!

Yes, it is- I ended up doing that after my 3d-printed spool eventually failed. I sourced a broken 2nd hand Apex non-hydro 11 speed shifter and moved the spool across.

Its a fiddly job but doable with patience. I think I might even have put a thread on here about it away back. As far as I could tell: Apex, Rival, Force, all used the same spool.

(I even built a mild steel spool at one point, but the ratchet spring in the shifter wasn't strong enough to rotate it back)

This vid on YT covers most of it:

I had this happen on the Wiltshire Wildcat back in march on my 22 month old gravel bike. Ended up being a pretty miserable ride with only a couple of gears available! The next ride it morphed into a single speed in top gear 🤢

It went into Evans just before lockdown and SRAM have replaced the shifter under warranty. Its only just fixed and I can't pick it up for 10 days due work....

It seems to me the shifter barrel is made of cheese 🧀 I will choose Shimano in future; in 30 years of riding, I've never had a shimano shifter fail due to poor materials.

Be aware, Mike, that Shimano seemingly aren't blameless in this. There are a lot of threads out there claiming that Shimano drop-bar CX/gravel shifter cables are sawing through the shifter housing. Shimano now sell a replacement nylon cable liner for the shifter internals. Apocryphally though I'd agree with you.

Yeah, as mentioned before my 5600 failed in a similar fashion like Force.

And not to mention, as I recollect, 7700 Dura Ace that was eating and guilotining cables like crazy...

Thanks once again, will give YT vid good watch at home.

Cheers!

Little re-cap I guess.

Managed to get into shifter this morning and found out cable bent at 90 degree right next to stopping barrel.

Not really sure how it happened, but now I'm re-installing new cable in and I will make sure there is not a hint of lose outer, all ferules are nice and tight.

Funnily enough never-ever had issue like that with full cable outer and external routing. Coincidence or just a bad luck?

Cheers!
