Taller types
We've all been there - liked a bike, scoped the geometry, found the dealers:
"Sorry mate - that size we'll have to order in" - never in stock, always buy it on spec, hope for the best.
I'm getting to test ride a bike! For the first time ever, without having to order - I'm going to test ride an XXL Turner Sultan this month. W00T!!!!
I'm travelling to Little Rock, Arkansas, USA for this pleasure - but oh how sweet this will be. I have such a childish glee it is stupid - but we do this for our own pleasure.
*dances a happy dance*
woooot!
I had a Sultan out on test a couple of weeks ago.
Very nice it was too.
Ah yes - but in XXL - a dream, full sus farmyard gate with a saddle. 23" frame should look just about right I'm thinking.
have fun!
TT- I was chatting to a RAF singlespeeder at the weekend, same one that beat me last year. Said he used to live 5 doors down from you.
He beat me buy a place. Again...
Luke
Oh, and if you could PM me an e-mail addy on the other channel I'll send some pics of that house to you when I get back from my trip in July.
Hallelujah! Just finding a bike that's a xxl can be a right bugger. Have fun.
you dont need a test ride, you know you will buy it.
Well even if the bike is shite, which i guess it won't be, its a fantastic excuse to ride in the USA ๐
I'm
Nice one tootall!
How tall are you by the way?
I ride a L sultan and I'm 6 ft 4 in. A size under what Turner reccommend for my height, but its a good fit for me.
P
well played. get some pics up on here!
23 inches! How tall are you?! I didn't know anyone made em that big until I was bike shopping and they asked me to have a sit on one, but none of the bikes I wanted came that large anyway. Must be to do with demand.
I'm 6'7" with a 40" standover height and arms like a simian (38" sleeve shirts - the longest you can buy).
I'm pretty sure this is the moster truck bike I've always wanted - my old 24.5" Gary Fisher Marlin and my 21" ScandAL 29er tell me I'm heading into the right size here. There will be photos - smug, sweet photos.
Luke - I guess you've peaked - he is a fit bugg3r tho. Well done.
I'm 'only' 6'2" & RIDE AN XL 5 Spot, & tbh an extra half inch in the TT would make it an even better bike for me. I don't know why people fear big bikes so much.
Because it's not rad innit...
Anyway, good work - I've never had a test ride on the right size - usually have to make do with an L if anything (6'5")
Too tall - i'm pretty much the same size as you and love my 23" Rockhopper 29er. I looked at the Turner after the review but wasn't prepared to spend the money. I read somewhere that there will be a 23" Spesh Epic next season (i think it's already on the USA site) so may well take a look at that as i've never felt right on my 26" Trance in a 22" frame.
My local spesh concept store ordered the bike in for me but i almost had to guarantee i'd buy it although i could have walked away if i'd wanted too i guess. It was one of only 2 in the country i could find.
Evans always had the odd big bike in one of their stores to try but it's an almost impossibility to get a small shop to order in a huge bike (understandibly).
I went to look at a shop in Leeds that does Koga road bikes as they come in a 66cm frame and they didn't even have any bikes in the country at all - again they had to be specially ordered and i'm not willing to splash the cash without a decent test ride first.
It's tough always looking at nice bikes that very rarely come in the sizes we need.
The Specialized bikes do have a lot of potential, but the Turner is there and lovely and I can justify (to myself at least) that I'm worth it. I don't have too many other vices and Mrs TT even agrees with my plan. The Spec bikes do seem to be obsessed with making them for shorter people and work on having the low head tube height and flatter bars - Turner seem to be up for making a more freeride bike and after all, it is lovely, so am I and I deserve it!
The 66cm road frame would be a dream - one day I'll go and see Mr Dave Yates and build it with him. It makes sense to me.
singlespeedstu - MemberI had a Sultan out on test a couple of weeks ago.
Very nice it was too.
Hey Stu, you kept that quiet ๐ - was that the DW - and where from????
You think XC bikes are bad, just try looking for big DH bikes.
Most folk assume that DH bikes should be small - not so - they should fit too. You need plenty standover, but you also need length if you're tall, but there's a balance between that and the extreme manoeuvrability you need in a DH bike.
Once i would have shared your joy (being 6'7" too) but nowadays i tend not to buy any frames over 20" - seem much more versatile to me but then i don't have a 40" inseam to content with ๐
