Flying with BA later this year and taking my bike. Booked an extra bag for my bike but pretty sure its going to be over the 23kg weight limit when its in a bike bag.
Can you combine the weight limit between the two bags - ie have 30kg for my bike bag and 16kg for my other checked bag?
What are your experiences?
virgin are better to take bikes on you do not pay to take them on
I've always found BA to be pretty flexible. Make sure it isn't over the 32kg limit for manual handling.
It will depend who you get at the checkout desk and what mood they're in
They wont let you have a 'combined total' of your 2 bags, tho you may just get lucky on the way out, can almost guarantee youll get stung on the way back. 23kg is usually enough even for a DH bike, you might want to consider transferring some heavy items to your other bag (tyres are a good one if they are folding) and maxing out your carry on allowance, wearing extra clothes etc.
If I am flying Glasgow to London then on to Geneva do I have to book an extra bag for each leg. e.g pay 4 times for the extra bag for 2 legs and the return? I called BA and even they were not clear!
Last year I flew BA Glasgow - Heathrow, Washington DC. I needed to pay a second bag charge. £40. That gave me 2 x 23kg bags - one was my bike box. To equalise the weights I carried my front rack, pedals, saddle seatpost, and bottlle cages in my other bag. This got my bike box well below 23Kg
The £40 charge with BA was once for the whole flight. Not seperate charges. There was another $60 charge for the return from San Francisco. I had no problems at either end I arrived early for check in with the hope the staff would be less stressed. Whether that helped or not who knows?

If they are connecting flights youll be fine to pay once each way, if you have a layover where you collect your bags then yes, you will have to pay again.

I know that BA is pretty good about taking bikes - no extra charge - but what is their pricing for overweight or oversize baggage? My bike case is larger than the maximum checked baggage allowance. I'm assuming yours was too...?
Did they say anything at the check-in counter or did they just allow your bike to come as a checked bag?
From the BA website:
"[i]We will accept non-motorised bicycles of all dimensions provided they are packed in a recognised bicycle bag[/i]."
