I'm used to flats but got a pair of those Sam hill oil slick flats and 5 tens cheap thanks to all the PSA on here.
As a dirty big coward the pins look like they'll destroy my calf/shin at some point. Do I have to mtfu? Or can I put something more stocking friendly on there and live with, presumably less grip?
Any advice appreciated, thanks in advance.
Just don’t scrape your leg on them!
I’d expect scrapes to be more likely with punier pins.
even if you do have scrape you will live. Just a bit uncomfortably for a short while.
back in the day I used to have some great shin scrapes from the ‘bear trap’ style pedals that were popular in the late 70s and early 80s.
Those are M4 pins that protrude by 5mm I believe, and the protrusion is threaded which grabs onto rubber.
There is much worse out there; longer pins, M3, thin smooth pins.
My own pedals have 4mm protrustion. It looks like on yours washers could be used on at least some of the pins to reduce protrusion.
Do I have to mtfu?
Unfortunately this is the answer. Those pins are relatively friendly, take a look at Hope F22, OneUp alloy or Superstar Nano for something to put the fear into your shins 🙀
Now that pedals and shoes are both really good I hardly ever slip off them. I haven't had a really big shin dinger for years and my calves are scab free.
When it happens, tell everyone that a shark bit you.
They are sharp little buggers, I have the same pedals
Ripped a pair of trousers on them when not actually riding
Other than that though, with a pair of sticky five tens, my feet haven't ever slipped off them yet
Supacaz do pedals with relatively smooth pins that are also friendlier on the soles of your shoes.
As previously noted, the BMX pedals of the 80s were nasty. Modern pedals and modern (sticky) shoes stay together really well. Doing bunny hops etc are probably the most likely thing to separate you from the pins.
You'll more likely get your leg scars from riding past bramble bushes and getting sliced.
You’ll mostly stab yourself when pushing the bike.
Cheers all, mtfu it is... 😬
I always wear football shin pads that slip over my feet . Although most strikes come from behind when pushing.
I've had stitches after a V12 interaction, I got a bit tangled up while crashing. I don't think they were a particularly aggressive pedal but they had very sharp threaded pins. Bad call by a&e really, there's very little suitable tissue to get a decent set of stitches in, and they didn't last long.
You’ll mostly stab yourself when pushing the bike.
This is FAR more likely though, IME.
Have shin pads fallen out of favour ?

Ahem cough cough ebike ...
After making that post 2 days ago, yesterday I scraped my calf along the V12 on my BMX while just sitting around at the track.
I just spotted blood on the back of my work trousers.

This exact thought went through my head on Saturday just after a rock cracked me on the shin
Back to pedals... you'll hit your shins less with grippy ones, just unfortunate that there's more damage when you do
