So I read the STW review but what's the current thinking about best flat pedal shoes?

Something that doesn't absorb water like a sponge, stiff enough to pedal but still comfortable to walk in

5:10? If so which ones?
Teva Links?
Shimano?
Specialized?

Five Ten Freeriders (Elements if they're older versions. I think they may be all Elements models now though even if not in the name, not sure).

Adidas terrex trail cross for me. Way better than the five tens

The important thing with Five Tens is pairing up the Stealth rubber with big pedal pins for grip and a good wide solid flat platform. V8s are no good. Vaults on the other hand... ๐Ÿ˜‰

Only other recommendation for that effect I've heard about is Vans with the waffle tread.

I spent the last few years riding in Vans. They're ok, but move around a bit because the holes in them are way bigger than pedal pins. If they did a negative profile of the typical vans sole in softer rubber I'd be all over them.

I've "flat dumped" in 510 VXIs with vaults before now, I was somewhat knackered though... They really do stick to those pedals.

I really like the old design Freerider- lacks toe protection but that's about all I can criticise. I've got a pair of standards and a pair of Elements, the Elements still isn't really a winter shoe but it's much better than my Impacts, which were a great sole attached to a shit shoe imo.

The new Impact VXI is good in bad weather too, more splash resistant and not a sponge. I sold mine as I hated the feel, or lack of, but if you can get past that or you like how they feel, then they're very good.

Sombrio X-Shazam is the best winter/bad conditions flat shoe I've used but you lose a fair amount of grip from 5 10

Teva links for me but - it's only a short term option, once these wear out I'm buggered. Luckily they are as tough as old...well...Teva links.

Teva Links are very tough, great to walk in, clean up smart for the pub, very warm in winter even when soaked but also fine for summer. They are also very grippy but do allow you to adjust your foot positioning at the same time. Shame they don't make them anymore so if you can find them in your size still go for it!

I was gutted to learn that the month I discovered just how good they were, Teva announced they were pulling out of the MTB scene. Typical!

Adidas terrex trail cross....five ten stealth rubber soles, firm pedal area but grip at rear and front for walking. Lighter than my impacts and definitely nicer styling.......

i alternate between Giro Jackets and Specialized 2FOs at the moment; each seem to be as good as the other, very grippy with DMR V12 mk2s and neither stay soaking wet for long, even after a torrential downpour.

Sportshoes website but it was very hit n miss getting them to be in stock. Rosebikes sell them in 2 colours restocking in a week. Struggled anywhere else though, no idea why? Should be a lot about as it's a mainstream brand.

Yeh I was having a nightmare. Only in stock in size 6 or 13. You reckon they're as grippy as 5-10s ?

Maybe not quite as grippy as 5-10's but certainly a long way ahead of everything else. Way better than my teva's
Much more comfortable that 5-10's and look a whole load better too

I have had a pair of impacts for 7 years. The adidas soles are not as spongie and are a bit firmer than impacts in the pedal area which I like for a more efficient feel. The stealth rubber grips very well and isn't degrading quickly, if I was 100% honest I would say the adidas shoes are say 95% of the grip the impacts are, however that may be due to the impacts softer n thicker sole and being well worn in at 7 yrs old. I am very pleased with the adidas shoes and can recommend them.

Sombrio Shazam are my best footfriends. Was really impressed with the solid construction, nicely finished throughout. Leather inner and outer so breathe nicely and can be treated with extra waterproofing if felt needed. Never had wet feet yet and the soles are stiff but still walkable. Huge velcro lace-guard/flap does the job. Stick to flats well yet allow for minor adjustment. Couldn't be happier except for maybe the odd petrol-blue-grey colour but that's small stuff I don't sweat. No idea if discontinued though as seem to be rare these days.

Wow, those shazams may be good but I could never see myself wearing something that looked that 'special'.

I'm on 5.10 Danny Mac editions at the moment, good in all conditions until you ride through a massive puddle and the take several days to dry.

Mine are the same ones, awful colour. And for some reason, the black ones have different construction and a mesh toe. But they are good enough to forgive all that, honest

Quite tempted with a pair of those Adidas shoes, their hiking/approach shoes look pretty decent too.

I managed to order a pair of the Adidas cross trail Terrex shoes but think they may be a bit small, most likely to be advertised in the classifieds section in the near future once I have decided, they will be brand new ther than a stroll around the house (carpet).

Currently switching between...

Old model Freeriders (the black and white 'Pollock' ones) with an 'aftermarket' insole - top grip but flexible and not great for walking/pushing in.

Van Gravel - not quite as grippy but stiffer and better for walking in.

Real shame I won't be able to replace either when they fall apart...

Has anyone used the Adidas Terrex Solo as opposed to the Trail Cross for riding? I can find the Solo in stock in my size but not the Trail Cross

I use the Trail Cross shoes, love them. Plenty of grip on the pedals but also grips when walking on grass because of the non-flat sole.

I did look at the Solos, but the smooth toe area made them less desirable for me compared to the Cross.

Does look like Adidas have removed them from their site now though. Maybe a new 5:10 due out or a new Adidas version coming.

If you do find it listed on Adidas but not in your size, fill out the shoe finder stuff and they will try and track you down a pair.

Same thought process as you danposs but I found the Solos in my size half price, whilst I was deliberating yesterday somebody else nabbed them, gah!

FiveTens can be too grippy for some folk. They can limit the ability to reposition your foot without having to take it completely off the pedal.

I'm currently using Giro Jackets. Great fit and grip. And dry out quickly too.

sundaytrucker what size/colour are your Adidas Terrex Cross Trails and how much are you likely to want for them if you decide to sell them?

how stiff are the giro jacket soles? I find my AM41s too flexible even with superfeet in them, I'm about 13 stone though.

I find them plenty stiff enough.

But a friend of mine who's just bought a pair cheap says they're too flexy. However he mainly rides clips in so maybe there's something in that.

Normally I have to run Superfeet in all my shoes too. But the Jackets are the only ones I don't need to.

ok ta. the spray flap on the AM41s has made them pretty much the only choice for me so far but for summer it is tempting to get something a bit cooler and that absorbs less of all the water on the surface of the planet.
