[#9624927]

The google fu is weak with this one.

I'm finding the flared drops on my Camino a bit too flared. Can anyone advise on an intermediate flared bar (that's cheaper than cowchippers!)

Width and drop feel about right on the bars I have - it's angle of the the hoods that's the real problem I think.

Ritchey do one for about 40 quid, looks ok apart from the wiggly 'ergo' bits on the drops

3t ergoterras are slightly flared I think without looking.
If they would suit what you want I have 2 pairs hung in my garage

I have cowchippers but refused to pay the mental retail price. Just kept searching until a used pair popped up (Pinkbike in the end). They are really good bars.

On-One Midge. Often dirt cheap, sometimes not. I could flog you a set, depending on what diameter you wanted.
StJohns Cycles in Bridgwater do something better for about £30

The on one nudge and alpkit bombers are nigh on identical so don't buy a pair of those!

The Ritchey Venturemax are really nice and the ergo bump is surprisingly comfy.

Thanks for the suggestions - I've done some research and it seems describing shapes isn't easy!

The bombers seem to be at the very flared end of the spectrum, with ergoterras at the non-flared end (basically it's randonneur or Maes bars after that).

Middle of the table seems to be cowchippers, venturemax and Genetic digest all much of a muchness.

My findings from bomber to roadie (edit: table looks better in preview)

bar name reach drop flare

lovemud bomber 70 120 40 (guess)
Nitto RM-3 65 120 38
on one midge 65 112 30 (guess)

ragley luxy 80 85 25 (splayed/midge style)
woodchipper 80 110 24 (but drops are splayed as well as flared)

venturemax 76 102 24
cowchipper 96 115 24
genetic digest 76 110 21

salsa Cowbell 68 115 12
genetic flare 80 130 11
selcof sterrato 70 125 10

3T Ergoterra 89 127 6

I'd better do some work now...

I just bought some cowbells for my cross bike. Seem like a nice shape, struggling to get the angle right on the hoods though. I'll get them taped tonight and hope for the best.

I've got the bombers and really like them, great confidence and control on gravel where I tend to use them most. However, I've found that the drops are quite small, maybe this is because they are so flared, if you like to have your hands quite far back on the drops or move your hands about much they wouldn't be a good choice, I can only get about two comfy positions on the drops themselves. I'm keeping an eye out for some cow chippers to replace them but they are fine for now.

I've got the Genetic Digest and the Salsa Cowbells… (and I've had Midges, which were too short in the extensions to be usable).

The Cowbell feels like a normal road drop with a bit of flare: you still have all the usual hand positions, including the hoods, it's just that your wrists are in a slightly different position when you're in the beds and you have a little more clearance between your forearms and the tops.

The Digest is a totally different beast: more like a low H-bar than a normal drop, I guess (not having used H-bars), where you only really have the main position plus (at a push) the tops; the hoods are out of bounds. It's nothing like either a flat bar or a road drop.

Those Selcofs look like an attractive alternative to a Cowbell. If your issue is the angle of hoods then it sounds like you want a more road-like bar, and the Selcof or the Cowbell would probably be about right.

Did I missed something?

Comfortable using top, hoods, drops and any other intermediate position on Digest.

Not having massive hands...

My only real life complaint to Digest is the fact that drop is a bit too deep for my liking. Something shallower will make it ideal for me...

Cheers!
I.

Just purchased some Giant Connect XR for a bike I'm building. Shape seems similar to those above but approx £15.

I've love mud bombers and I'll be swapping them out for something else pretty soon. The drop section just isn't long enough for comfortable use.
Off road I find my hands far too close to the end of the drops. And on road there isn't enough drop to move your hand around.

YMMV, then. I think I'd have to dislocate my wrists to use the hoods 🙂

Had cowbells they have a minimal very subtle flare now have cowchippers to put on my CAADX with some really nice neon orange tape to compliment the gunmetal frame. Yes I’m a tart!!!

Giant Connect are almost identical to Cowbells IIRC but way cheaper.
