we have been told by the forestry rangers at Tilgate that the reason they don’t have many bins is that they prefer you to flick it into the bushes. Better for the environment.

My wife's schoolfriend is Manager of one of the Royal Parks and they have the opposite policy because the nutrients are affecting the eco-balance.

https://www.royalparks.org.uk/managing-the-parks/park-regulations-legislation-and-policies/dogs-in-the-royal-parks

There is no one size fits all, but on balance he thinks bagging for proper disposal is less likely to be wrong than the other way round. So if a place has a clear stick and flick policy, then by all means do it but if requested by signage to pick up, don't assume that because S&F is OK elsewhere that it is here.

idlejohn, not many people go into the brambles

Ah but they do, don't they. To pick blackberries. To retrieve the kid's ball that's just been lobbed in there. To relieve themselves(!). To cut through from path to another. To pick up their dog shit.

It's not just your dog shitting there once. It's your dog every day times hundreds of other dogwalkers.

Why not take it home and spread it around your garden so that the rain can get rid of it there, instead of leaving it where people can walk in it?

You make a lot of assumptions. Where did I say I left it where people can walk in it?

I flick it under hedges and if people are crawling around under hedges they have more to worry about than whether they kneel in some poo.

You can responsibly leave poo (as I do) or you can irresponsibly leave poo (i.e. in the middle of a pavement) like others do.

You may need to amend your 'rules' based on that.

As I said, the forestry policy is stick and flick, so I do as I am asked.
If you don't like it, campaign to them. I think ti makes sense and we pick blackberries and bilberries every year and have yet to have come across any poop. The berries are high up and the poop tends to the ground.

Did I suggest that the shit would be on the berries? 😀

Have you lot ever picked brambles? If you're standing deep enough into the bush that you could step on dog crap you have far bigger problems ruining your day.

I walk my dog through some tracks near farmers fields. There is quite obviously a few different dog walkers on this route

Let them shit where they like and leave it - It’s bloody horrible. Stinks and gets on my walking boots and quite often my own dogs paws

Stick and flick merchants - ‘think’ they are smart arses doing the right thing. When in fact they are flicking it into bushes which in turn protect the shite from the rain and you just end up with flies, smell and dog shite everywhere. It’s shit. It isn’t pleasant and the more of it that is flung about the worse the flies and smells become.

Bag it and hang it - scum bags

Bag it and take it home - I fall into this and still feel guilty about the landfill full of plastic bags full of dog shite.

I remember when Mabie were doing a load of work about 10yrs ago. They rerouted all the cycle tracks through the walking routes for a mile or so. I remember all the flies and stench which felt like you were eating dog crap. This is what people who you would presume were on similar wavelength, similar interests and you would hope would give a damn we’re happy to put up with.

It's like driving - traffic is other people not them. Dog shit is bad but its other people's dog shit. My dog is a fluffy wuffy little member of the family etc. I live beside a popular forest. In summer I hate the first 500m up the hedgerow lined lane into the woods. It is full of flies and reeks of dog shit. Bleurgghhhh. It's essentially been reduced to a biohazard.

tomd I totally agree. Even though I am a dog owner I still find it amazing how repulsive standing, walking near or even smelling dog shit is.

It’s not a country smell. It’s not natural for the environment etc. Walk around any modern housing estate and when you get near the bins take a great big sniff. I bet you are getting a lovely whiff of eau de pap. I take it home. My bin smells of shit. I am not kidding myself otherwise.

Again, if there is some kind of chemical I can put in a bucket and dissolve it and poor away I am interested. Or is it safe enough just to flush it down my own bog

A mate did the ‘stick and flick’ - threw the stick in afterwards. Dog charged into the undergrowth and came out with the stick!

All I will say is this: when I am King, there will be snipers.

You lot get me crowned and I will see to it. This will stop.

Got my vote

At least once a ride I do, and the embarrasment of going a bit wide on a nice bit of singletrack is only heightened by the "smell of shame"

Take it home and flick it on your garden. Leave nothing

Human poo smells worse. When I was kid we were sea cliff climbing in Cornwall and somehow some human poo got onto our rope, then spread itself all over us before we realised where the smell was coming from. Never forgotten that experience.
