[#2752366]

Over the past few weeks i have fixed a few bikes for work colleagues and some people in the locale. For this i have received some payment - whether it be beer or cash.

I would like to do this on a regular basis as its something i enjoy and am good at.

If something breaks after i fix it - how liable am i?

Regarding cash - what do i do re tax etc??

Liable - you are although you shouldn't be.
Tax - you should register your self-employment immediately.
I wouldn't worry about the 1st, I wouldn't worry about the 2nd (has always been S-E though).

you would be liable if through negligence something happens.

when you do something, did you take all reasonable measures to ensure it does not go wrong.

eg. If you tighten a handlebar up and it then snaps, what measures have you taken to ensure it wasn't your fault?

More likely than you think. You fixed the bike, say the rear tyre was punctured, they rode it. Crash! They ring a no-win-no-fee solicitor and you get sued.
I was once sued for allegedly providing a 26"-framed MTB to a client who was 5'2". She even said I rode the bike (and I'm 5'7"). Luckily my insurers, Zurich, were having none of it and invited her to lodge it with the court.
It helps to be covered, people are stupid.
