[#2312567]

Currently ride a 2009 stumpy elite but find some of the ride I do in the Lakes etc can be a bit much for it and it is getting a bit battered. I've been eyeing up a Five Pro but see the Five AM is just £100 dearer for extra front travel and a maxle rear end. For that matter, add a further £100 for an Alpine.

I am 6" tall so would need to go for a 20" and I will be test riding One Planets 20" AM round Llandegla when it clears up a bit (may obviously take it down the Masts and Worlds End to really test it out).

I wonder if anyone else shared my kind of dilemma? Any views would be appreciated.

I will go for the AM myself as I bought the first 2008 5 AM

Go for the extra £ 100 quid But to be honest The 5 always had
the last years Patriot swing arm so is very stiff as a quick
release swing arm.

Regarding size the best thing is to try and test them
But the smaller size would be ok for fun rides but
for longer journey's go for the correct size.

Merry Christmas

i would say it depends on what your using it for...altho i sold 8 fives to a alpine hirecentre and theyve had no issues with them...hired every day in the season..

Is that right about the five swing arm being the same as the 2008 patriot?

I was trying to get a maxle swing arm for my patriot, it might be a lot easier if its the same

i dont think it is....the swingarm has changed every year.this year its a lot slimmer and is beefed up at the front near the pivot.if your thinking about a maxle get it at purchase point as its £600 to retro fit one.....

I do varied riding in Lakes / Peaks /N Wales and my local is Rivington (which I would still use my stumpy for) - think the Pro would be fine but I think the extra £100 for the maxle and longer travel might just be offset by the weight penalty.

i wouldn't go AM. I did and it was too much for most of my riding,

Also bear in mind that the new AM has the 160 - 120 talas not the 100/130/160 (which i had) so youll prob end up riding round at 160mm. Which IMO was rubbish for every day riding as way too slack.

Id go pro with the Maxle.

IMO the 5 would be way too slack with 36's to make an all-round bike. For the Alps ut would be great but i found the standard Pro too slack for flat, twisty singletrack. 36's are also alot heavier as you pointed out.

Just check out the Mojo Trail Diaries videos to see how capable a Pro is when ridden by a good rider (Rowan Sorrell).

Grantway: You're talking nonsense as usual regarding the 5's swingarm....Where do you get this info from?!!!!!

Get a test ride before you decide.5's don't suit everybody, and a 5 with a 160 fork is great on steep downhill but nothing else.
I've had a 5 and found the angles wrong for me making it a really horrible ride.

go for the 20in with a straight post and 50-70mm stem. I am 6'1 and find mine a good size for covering ground. I dont get massive air or need to backflip etc...

For normal riding the AM would be far too slack, but really depends what you want. Mine has 140s but it would be nice to drop it down on the front on some hills.

150mm would be decent for big descents, 135 for normal riding and 120 for climbing.

I think the Alpine is generally a better bike than the 5am (armchair opinion) for tougher stuff.

5pro with dropper post and talas or uturn would be money well spent for the whole spectrum of riding.

No you wouldn't. An 18" Five is plenty big enough for you if you're 6 foot.

you could get a five pro with a rear maxle and get some second hand 160mm forks to put on it for any trips to the alps

Cheers guys for the opinions. Think I'll arrange a test ride of the 18" pro and the 20" am. Mr cycleworld I a am interested in the orange orange but am also looking at a couple of upgrades (particularly the wheels).

I'll contact you after my test rides(s) to see what you can do for me

I have a five with Floats 36's I just put a spacer in and reduced them to 140mm, so you get the extra stiffness and not to slack for trail riding, and if you go to the Alps just pop the spacer out only takes half an hour, Maxle back end is super stiff , with 36's and maxle back end the 5 is like a mini DH bike that can still climb..I'm also running a Push'd Vannila R with Ti spring which really makes the bike more balanced with the 36's up front.and the dropper post is a must the extra weight is well worth it, the cable guides are there ready to use.[url=

I was torn between a 5Pro or an AM and ended up buying a CUBE STEREO RACE 😀

I found that £ for £ it was better VFM than the Orange, beautifully built, awesome attention to detail and less common too. The spec of the individual components obviously doesn't make bikes better than the sum of their parts but on this bike I just couldn't justify buying an Orange once I'd ridden the Cube.

Bought it from Twelve50 bikes in Frodsham who were in running for best bike shop in STW awards, great service from them.

The 20" is huge. I'm 6,1" and had an 18". Was perfect. A mate is 6 6" or so and has a 20". It's a gate.

Jools 182 sorry for late reply But in 2008 Orange
gave you an up grade option to have the Swing Arm with the
Maxle Axle and the 2008 Patriot XCEL came with the Maxle
as standard.
But the Orange 5 in 2008 came with the Patriot
2008 quick release swing arm,
Orange did say to me that you would have to push
the Maxle swing arm hard to find the difference
against the quick release swing arm.
