Just replaced the pads on my Avid Juicy 3's, what a pig to do!
Anyway could only seem to fit them if I removed these little metal plates/clips?

What do they do & do they need to be fitted?
They came off the top of the caliper here:

I've left them off my Juicy 5's for years now and it's been fine. I couldn't work out what they were supposed to do either??
Thanks V8, they seem to work fine without them at the moment, did wonder if they were there to stop the brakes screeching?
Yep, lost mine on the rear of my Juicy 5. Not sure what it did but hasn't been a problem

I find the pad change really easy although I have heard of some brands of pads that are a bit thicker than normal so that could be a problem.
The Metal clip on mine seems to have the pads clipped into it, I guess if people have been running brakes without them its fine.. but keep them safe..!

The bits you have removed are there to stop the pads vibrating under braking. The pads are not securely anchored in place so these fill that extra 1 to 2mm gap to stop movement from the pads. As you've found out, they also stop you getting the new pads in.
I lost mine, they fell out on the trail and without them I got a very severe screaming resonance from the brakes which was hugely horrible.... AND Fisher Outdoor, predictably had no spare ones for months.
SO hang on to those, and try and put them back when the noise gets to you
OR
Buy some other brake....almost any...other brake will be better from a maintainence point of view

That's the pad spacer. The clips in ski's original pic are in addition to the pad spacer.
Juicy 5's here.
Same as the guys above - Lost one of mine three / four years ago & not had any problems.

had to change a guests pads this summer as he didn't know how. what a nightmare! sat on the side of a mountain, +3°c, surrounded by slushy snow in drizzly rain. numb fingeres. other guests moaning because they were cold.
what a cockmonkey design.
Shimano for the win.
They're there to help stop your pads falling out if you remove your wheel and don't fit a spacer between them.
