I am trying to fit a set of Rockshock 461 forks to a Giant Boulder which did have a rigid fork. I have removed the lower race from the old fork and now need to fit it to the new set. There is about 6mm at the bottom which is very tight, interference fit, and I am not sure how to drive it into place.

I don't want to just tap it with a hammer and risk damaging it. So what is the best way to fit it?

Mike

The plastic extension tube from a vacuum cleaner is just the right size, place over steerer and tap with hammer until in place

put it in bowl of boiling water first.

Smear of grease on the steerer.

Some uPVC waste pipe as a sliding hammer if necc, although if you do the first two things you may find an open jawed spanner with a rag baffle will do it with some help from the workshop persuader.
