Took the BMX down my local skatepark for the first time last night, after 20 mins on one of the half pipes (6 footer) I was ready to give up. Just felt horrible, and no matter how hard I pumped I couldn't maintain speed.
Had a break practising manuals and went back. By the end of the evening I'd got it so I was pumping up to the coping each side which felt awesome.
What's the next step to getting air on the ramps?
Drop in!
It's a mini ramp, you won't die or anything 8)
Dropping in on a smaller ramp and had no problem with it. Didn't have my helmet so didn't want to try it on the bigger ramp. It's what to do when the wheels run out of ramp that I'm not sure of.
And it wasn't mini it was like the Great Wall of China!
It's still not a very large ramp, you're still at least 4 ft lower than a vert ramp so you just need to MTFU a little.
Just get used to dropping in and popping out the other side for starters then move on to rolling back in, manuals, ice picks if you have pegs and what have you.
The key to air in a mini is the bunny hop, on vert it's another kettle of fish. Keep to the simple, bike control stuff first and when you have the confidence to get the back wheel out of the coping, go find a bigger ramp!
Cool, popping out is doable in my head. I'm going to have to go back this evening I think ๐
