First time I'm going to attempt to bleed my hayes strokers this weekend and by all accounts it seems pretty straight forward.......but is there anything really important I need to know which others may just take for granted, something that is so obvious I could over look it??

Any hints and tips appreciated, thanks.

First q.......is it OK to mix different brands of DOT 4?

anything really important

brake fluid is hygroscopic, and its effectiveness drops rapidly as it absorbs water, and does not keep that well once the seal on the bottle is broken. So do not keep the bottle unnecessarily open, and it's best to use fresh fluid rather something you have had around for years in the garage ๐Ÿ™‚

Should be OK, but there is no good reason to; use fresh fluid and bleed it so you replace all the fluid that is already in the brakes.

Make sure to take the pads out for the bleeding; if you get any fluid on them, you will have to throw them away (you might need to put something in there instead of them, don't know about Hayes, but Shimano brakes come with a little plastic block to use for bleeding).
