I'm thinking of buying my first fs bike and have been looking at a trek fuel ex8 or spesh camber expert. Can anybody give opinions on these bike's or offer alternatives?

The 26er Camber Expert? If so, I have one and love it. There are some good deals on them at the moment too.

I really like mine and its been a while since I got on a bike that just felt 'right' but this did. In fact I would like to add a dropper post but that's about it, which is unusual for me.

There are various things I could mention about why I like it but they way well be down to me/my riding style/where I ride. From what I have read on here some love them, some don't but it should be on your test ride short list for sure. (IMHO)

Is there anything specific you would like to know?

Trek fuel ex bikes are amazing to ride and the bearings in the frame seen to last much better than other brands. Plus you have the back-up from trek when it comes to warranty.

Do you have a hardtail at the moment ? If so what do you like / dislike about it and where do you ride, where do you think you might ride ?

Quite hard to make recommendations without some background, good news for you is that there are lots of good choices

I tried a fuel ex9, and had pretty much made up my mind to buy it, but my wife fancied an anthem x. We tried them at Rutland water, and I liked the anthem much more, it felt more immediate, so I bought one. My poor Indian fire trail is now languishing in the shed, and makes me feel guilty every time I go in, but I still pick the anthem.

I'd try them out

What do you really want it to do?

I didn't get on with my Camber at all, but there's nothing wrong with it really- it just didn't tick the boxes for me. Didn't really see where the money was going at the RRP, but they're often discounted.

The first full sus bike you ride (unless it's a rare dud) will feel amazing. So will the second and maybe the third.

All depends what you do and want to do. Fast rolling trails, rocks, drops monster hucks to flat....

Try and find some demo's plenty of shops do them some have days others have bikes to test. (Skyline/Llandegla/etc) If you have a good shop with a good range they will be able to help you out.

Best to come back with your top requirements and areas you ride for better advice.

Yep another vote for Trek EX

Anthem would also be worth a look particularly with the prices on Pauls Cycles.

...always best to try before you buy though
