First I have seen of it. What a silly idea. Just to pat a few people on the back. Personally I think 1st is enough.
Often in the men's you could throw Danny Hart's ridiculously big baseball cap over the first 5... No problem with it myself, what's magic about 3?
There's been 5 steps on the world cups since the Grundig days at least.
I remember Warner getting a podium BITD for 5th, might have been the first brit to get one. I know he was definitely the first to win one. Would have been 95-96ish?

Iirc it came in when Cadel Evans got 5th in a world cup in Australia as a junior. Its stuck since then.
It's been 5 forever - it's (usually) a big bloody field - not 10 in a 100m final or 20 at a F1 race - there can be hundreds of competitors.
Is it possible to win second place? A friend of mine just posted on FB that her daughter won second place in a skating competition. I wanted to reply that she didn't win, she was actually the first of the losers but didn't want to p155 on her bonfire as I like her despite her FB boastings.
It's a tradition in MTB racing, DH at least anyway.

Kaprun, 96
Next was Steve Peat at Snoqualmie Pass in 98.
