What would JMC be riding if he were still around today?

A lovely, talented man who stayed grounded and pleasant in spite of his fame.

Such a shame. Ride free.

He was hot too...

An inspiration.

BTW, I can put Dirt onto DVD if anyone wants it. Quality is good. Just for the around price of the blank DVD and postage, not to make money 🙂

love his FSR...it would be a short travel xc bike now, and the length of the stem would get him slaughtered on STW?!

Wow. That long. RIP JMC.

If he was around now, he'd _still_ be riding better than many of us could ever aspire to. On pretty much any bike.

I also have a copy of DIRT on VHS. And no video player any more... DezB, you're about to have mail!

Juiced, that footage is ace, never seen that before! DH racing in short sleeved lycra top and shorts, 60mph on gravel corners!

RIP JMC

Man that makes me feel old, was gutted when the issue of MBUK with the bad news came through the door in its silver envelope. Was a real hero for a young lad along with John Tomac. I fancied his girlfriend at the time too! RIP

15 years (!) Worked in Bike shop at the time and remember being told by one of the visiting reps. Was a massive loss.

Juiced - That youtube clip is a great find! Those skinny FutureShocks, cantilever brakes and XC style geometry...and sure he'd still leave me standing at the top bimbling along on 5" of travel wondering if my 185mm disc brakes will overheat.

RIP JMC

I remember going into Andrew Kyffin's shop in 1997 and saying out loud ' wow who is that gorgeous hunk, pointing to JMC's poster on the wall, the shop went quiet and Andrew kindly told me the story. Left feeling totally saddened at such a loss, and a little embarrassed.

Wow 15 years ago. I was 15 when I found out and it made me cry, he was a true inspiration.

Very sad, he still is one of the true greats of the sport.

RIP JMC

15 years! How things have changed, couldn't beleave it when I read about his death in cycling weekly in news agents, none of this internet back then.

Swear I read it before doing my paper round, but I'm also convinced I was working nights in a warehouse before going to Uni in August 95!

Ride free!

RIP Jason.

I remember seeing the sad news in a free mag I got at a race at Newnham Park back in 1995 (think I've still got it tucked away somewhere) and feeling strangely empty inside. I tried to explain to my better half what it meant but I don't think she knew why I went so quiet, even though I never saw him in the flesh.

JMC and John Tomac were my first 2 mtb heroes. I used to love reading the reports of the kamikaze and all the reports written by his dad.

God bless you JMC - always go through my head every time I drive past the memorial. Has there ever been a plan to create something more permanent?

I had the bike, my brother had the tattoo ,but neither of us had the skills.

JMC and I are they same age and I have nothing but respect for this guy, A tragic loss of a such a talent.Often remembered and never forgotten.

It speaks volumes that a guy such as JMC is so fondly remembered by so many when MTBing was no where near as popular as it is now.

Crazy legs and wicked cross ups the first British downhiller rip it up JMC , RIP it up !

A true legend. RIP.

In my last job we used to use Dirt outakes for demo'ing broadcast editing equipment - wish I still had the rushes. Some quality clips.

had a ride this morning....didn't manage a one footer though.

I remember going to pick up my MBUK copy from the newsagents, was working in leeds at the time, and saw the headline on the front cover. Kinda ruined the day.

Oh and someone mentioned the shot in "Dirt" of him blasting down a grassy track. Always liked the music, never found out what it was.

Reading about him as a teen and I wished I could ride as good as him then one mtb mag issue with sad news.

Didn't know him but he sounded like a nice bloke despite the fame.

Time flies but people are not forgotten.

AS above, he's probably the main reason for me riding mountain bikes. Used to go to the BMX track above the Metrocentre, hoping to bump into him.
Saw him in Hardisty's a few times and he was dead cool and nice to us long haired uncool teenagers 🙂 It was proper hero worship at the time.

Can't believe it's 15 years. Must still be tough for his family and friends.

RIP JMC.

Not read any of the above, just wanted to add my message, 15 years! Remember the day I read the announcement, was idly flicking through a copy of the Sunday Times they had in a pub while I was waiting for my lunch while we had a stop out on a sunny summer ride and the "Cycling News" headline caught my eye. I remember the shocked disbelief I felt vividly.

RIP. A genuine inspiration and a true icon. Those images of the insane speeds amid the plumes of dust on Mammoth mountain are truly special.

Edit: Rest in Peace doesn't seem right somehow - if there is such a thing as an afterlife, spirit, whatever (I've got no firm views on these things) JMC won't be resting, he'll be shredding as hard as ever and good on him!
