Shimano's newer external BBs are a smaller size and use a different tool to their older ones?

AAARGH

3 differerent external BB tools in the shed and none of them even close to fitting

Yep. And they ship an adapter with the BB so you can use your old tool

Right. Got a 2nd hand bike here that I'm rebuilding.ย  Annoying.

more annoying is the xt and xtr look similar bur arnt!!!!

If you are taking a knacked one out, use an oil filter wrench, big mole grips or similar brutal toolage. New one will, (unless you get a Billy bargain OEM one possibly)ย  with the adaptor as noted above.

Yes they are smaller - and this means due to the wonder of Marin's specifying department I now need one size BB tool for BB, other BB tool size for front rotor and old BB/internal for rear rotor...!
