Planning a return trip later in the year to Canada, culminating in Whistler. We're gonna land in Calgary and head accross west so was just wondering if anyone has experience of Fernie and/or Golden for cycling/things to do etc. Slightly more xc bias but all things considered. Will only be able to stop at either Fernie or Golden, not both. Ta muchly

Biked at both Fernie and Golden - both are good - I would slightly edge with Fernie as I think there is more XC (very tough XC to be fair) and the town is a bit bigger

Also if you go to Fernie I would seriously consider going to Nelson BC for a few days as that is really fantastic

I've not spent as much time biking in Golden/Kicking horse so perhaps others can tell you more about that area

Nelson; my favoritist place on the planet. If it was any more laid back it wouldn't exist.
(also my "happy" place shhhh).
I miss Nelson ๐Ÿ™

@ Backhander

Yup - Nelson BC truely is a wonderful town, never been anywhere like it

If I were to live in Canada again that is the only place I would consider

If only there were jobs there.
If I were single with no responsibilities I'd have just gone and tried my luck. One day (trying my luck not being single!)

Thanks for info.Hmmm, Nelson looking tempting! Just need to link it up as a route to please the other half!!We were thinking Calgary-Fernie/Golden-Glacier National Park-Lac Le Jeune-Whistler. Nelson looks a bit south. Any suggestions as a roadtrip to whistler?

take a look at this for some guided riding in fernie, was planning to do that this year but never got around to it http://www.sacredrides.com/tours/bc/weekend/

then you could hit the 7 summits near rosland on your way west, awesome pictures here

I did - Calgary - Kamloops - back road to Pemberton - Whistler - Squamish - Vancouver - Nelson - Fernie - Calgary

of those the biking I would do again are Squamish, Nelson BC, Fernie

The driving is much better in the Fernie - Nelson section and you can get on the longest free ferry service in the world

Not to day that the ice field drive isn't great but you're not going to be able to do everything

Whatever you do it will be fantastic no doubt
