bear in mind potential conditions what is gonna be my best bet quick ride on my way past in early Feb. I have done Glentress red and loved it although the last 5months and Christmas have taken their toll so I will be much slower and puffier! is Innerleithen Red fun? worth doing instead? only one ride possible before a 9 hour drive home!
Surely worth trying Innerleithen so you'll have your own comparison for the next time!
Inners' climb is a fair bit tougher which is worth bearing in mind but the descents are better/radder from what I remember.
Closures at innerleithen just now- nothing on the descents but the climb's disrupted, takes out the nice Leadmine climb and replaces it with the steeper and less interesting southern upland way climb.
This is a bit controversial but I don't rate the innerleiten XC that highly- it's fairly hard work but it lacks variety and it's kinda hard to figure out where the altitude goes- you blow off an awful lot of gravity on fairly featureless trail, then you have to pedal like mad for half the descents. It's by no means bad, but I prefer Glentress's waymarked stuff. Then again if you've not done Innerleithen already, it makes sense to do it I reckon. The black is great fun if you like riding over rock features (I do) and if you like the star attraction caddon bank it's easy to ride up and do it again (or standalone)
Both are pretty impervious to weather, though the top of minch moor is pretty exposed so not ideal during bad weather.
Now- the gamechanger's the offmap/dh stuff. If you're up for a bit of that then innerleithen's a totally different animal and becomes, well, completely brilliant.
Got to be Innerleithan, glentress is getting so watered down now, it's seriously spoilt from what it was a few year ago. The diversion at inners ttakes out a nice climb but still leaves you with the final climb to the top with all the fun of the descent. Not sure how it will be in a couple of weeks if the forecasted weather arrives.
