maybe this is a good time to ask...

what are fat bikes for?

i rode one the other day briefly. it weighed about 17 tonnes, and wouldnt turn. like literally wouldnt turn.

i dont get it.

so... serious question:

what are they for?

Can't you compromise by taking the front wheel off the skinny bike and fitting it to the fat bike ?

Would an orange bike like this not be a better compromise or is it just too unniche?

still wondering what they do better? i can understand the drive for rigid, 29er, full suss, ss etc. but what's good about huge tyres?

Mine weighs just over 31 lbs and handles just like "a bike". Just like any other style of bike, there are variations in geometry of different models which affect handling. I've ridden it on the beach and in snow (the original raison d'étre). However, it is ridden more on "natural" XC trails.

It was a hoot at Glentress (including Spooky Woods) but too much of a handful on the rockier trails at Laggan Wolftrax.

Is this an excuse to show off your bikes? I'd choose the orange one.

Fatbikes do not handle like any other style of bike at all. I could go into why in great detail but it would clearly be wasted on you.

It was a hoot at Glentress (including Spooky Woods) but too much of a handful on the rockier trails at Laggan Wolftrax.
Your idea of "a hoot" is way different to mine.

each to their own but don't just spout total bollox to try and justify your choice.

Try reading what I wrote again, but see if you can get a grown-up to help you with the punctuation this time.

Ah.. ok, sorry 😳 I get what you were saying now 8) (asked one of my kids to explain. ;))

"Just like any other style of bike, there are variations in geometry of different models which affect handling"
sure there are, but that's not really where the main quirk/trait of every Fatbike's handling comes from.. by their very nature you physically couldn't make a fatbike handle well for the style of riding I enjoy whichever geometry was used.

They're def not for everyone but as I said, each to their own.

If a bearded man falls off a 29er in a forest but there's nobody else around, does anyone know it has no gears?

You'd surely admit a Fatbike is far from ideal if sprinting (but freewheeling once upto speed), braking late, drifting, popping off everything you can, pumping/manualling at every opportunity is the kinda thing you enjoy.
I can't imagine having anywhere near as much fun as Druidh suggests at the likes of GT on a fatbike to a regular hardtail.

They might be a little sluggish on the sprinting front I'll give you that.

As for drifting and popping off roots they iz radsik* innit.

*In an undamped out of control spacehoper stylee. 😀

Edit.

I almost forgot.
The bestist thing about them is the noise they make when you get up to speed. No need for any of this "rider on your left mate" behaviour.
They think they've got a Landy behind them and dive into the bushes out of the way. 😀

I like fat cause am rad and more niche than you all!!!

Or

I enjoy having a choice, some days fat and some days thin or normal as some would say. All adds to that rich tapestry of life. (as long as its niche)

you need a better imagination then, or maybe a sense of fun, it is supposed to be about fun afterall, not an exercise in analysis

certainly do 🙄
WTF are you? the fun police? does going slower but ending up more tired for it give a better "sense" of fun?
