Oh read the title wrong, thought it said FUN bikes... bought into that about 6 years ago 🙂

I did GT yest on my 29+ KramPug, same speed as a 6" full susser, so there not that slow. more fun on blue routes but for a rigid bike?, pretty impressive. I like the negative haterz and trolls on here, even more fun to humiliate them when you meet them lol:.

Fatbikes are not mountain bikes, never tried to be. They offer other types of riding. But if you want to ride xc and trail centres why not? 🙂

Here is some waffle on Trail Centre stuff and the KramPug; Surly KramPug at Glentress

Krampus owners - I keep hearing such good things about them, can they genuinely ride your 'usual' trails all day long without destroying your legs?

Ie, can you head out with your buds on their standard MTB's,and do everything they do at the same speed?

Yep.
Fatbikes are shite on normal trails.
They're so shite that even a fat old duffer like myself can still get a top 15% finish at a rocky enduro event.

Loing the BMX/Spacehopper refrence.
That's quite an accurate description.

Looking forward to our Black Forest winter, its got to be a better alternative to skiing...

Isn't Manuel Beastly real ? I read it on an internet so it must be true, non ?

I class 29+ as a fatbike :-), deft not a regular MTB 26 or 29", as you can run them at half the pressure of regular 29x2.35 tyres,

Low pressure, = more float, fits the profile of a fatbike 😉

Yes he's real, but like all real super heroes he has a mild mannered alter ego - who rides a bicycle for a large Taiwanese company.

at lot of the pics of Fatbikes seem to be of them laid down on their sides in barren wasteland. did you give up in the end and decide that it would be quicker to walk?

I tried a random blokes one round a Carpark and I`ve wanted one ever since......
And I am really drawn to the new specialized one... I know its not Niche but it looks like its all been designed by the same bloke at least.
I`m just trying to justify the £2500 cost for the only spec that's coming in next year 😳
Difficult as I don't think I could splash that without riding it, but they are going to be in quite short supply so a demo on a small frame one is going to be difficult to come by ?

It ain't no hype! Fat bikes are the shizzle.

Ok so I can ride from my door and be at the beach or 350m ASL in teh snow within 30mins cycling so it makes for some awesome loops but they are actually a load of fun on most terrains. You cannae change the laws of physics so getting one up a hill is harder work and slower, but not that much slower and it's great training!

Stop it all of you ...! Just makes me want one. Grrr.

That being said, the wife asked the other day " Are you going to get another bike on the cycle scheme?"

Hmmm.

Tried one and didn't get it. In a year or so's time there'll be loads in the classifieds as 29er+ rapidly gathers momentum and designs lighter and more compact than the Krampus become available.

I've been tempted by the Fatty rolling chassis and converting the wife's bike (It's not really hers, it was just a blag so I could get a new one by gifting her the old one)

I'd love a fatty.

They're also good for a British summer

Just remember when the bike comes to a stop, your foot is going to go a lot deeper than the tyres... 🙂

I must be the only person who's bought one and not really liked it!

I got a Fatty and ran it for a couple of months or so but sold it as I never really got on with it. It was a bit of fun at the local trail centre but I didn't think much of it for long 5h+ rides.
Needless to say I've got rid of it now and I can honestly say that I don't miss it at all.

I read the hype and bought one. Turns out it was even better than the hype would suggest 🙂

Here it is, lying on it's side in a barren wilderness after I got tired of pedalling it.

Here it is again, on the back of a donkey because I didn't have the energy to ride it up the hill myself
[img]

And getting loaded onto a landcruiser, the only vehicle suitable for carrying the girth of a fatbike to the top of the hill.

STW is too full of gnarly honed whippet-like racers for a bike that's just fun to ride to catch on... 🙂

I have been running a Fatty now for a couple of months and love it. It's a different ride and does take some getting used to - a bit like riding singlespeed for the first time. It was a natural extension to the bike collection which includes a CX bike (one extreme), rigid singlespeed, full sus race bike and now the On-One (the other extreme). It cost me about £750 to build so cheap as well, but drilling the rims was a ball ache!

I would say that they are not fast, but neither are they slow. My average speeds are about the same as on my single speed, but it is much much more fun. My riding is mostly local around the Clent Hills and surrounding trails - a lot of which are fairly sandy. Cannock is amazing on it - big smiles! I even rode to work on it last week which is 20 miles along the canal each way and it was no bother.

On road they are hateful things, but as soon as it goes off road it rolls much easier than you would expect, climbs extremely well and descends like a loon. Winter will be an interesting test, but the mud it has seen so far has been dispatched with ease as it doesn't sink!

Oh - and towing the kids on the trailer bike or carrying my daughter on a WeeRide (or doing both) is brilliant. Now I want (no, I need) a fat bike trailer bike!

btw - who is doing the FAT category at Oktoberfest? Should be a blast!
