Furious Freds are very very thin and wear out pretty quickly, they also have no grip. On the other hand, they're stupidly light, and are absolutely unequalled in terms of speed!
The Fast Freds are slightly thicker and heavier, still wouldn't be my choice for anything but pretty straight forward off road stuff!
So what are good racing tyres for more demanding conditions? What sort of weight is sensible to get something that lasts?
It's not about lasting, that doesn't really matter if you want a race tyre, it's about having grip, which the Furious Freds don't really. They're fine if it's proper hardpack, but anything loose or loamy and they can get into trouble quite quickly!
Rocket Rons are a superb choice for a race tyre, 400g in a 2.1", with plenty of grip. Depending on where you race/ride a Furious Fred on the back is fine, just using one on the front you have to be a bit more brave/stupid!
I use maxxis crossmark most of the time with Conti speed-king supersonics if its really wet. If you cant get up a muddy hill with the crossmarks then you wont be much faster with anything else, and its has to be pretty shitty to make much difference downhill to. Of course if you run a big knobby tyres then youll have more grip but if your racing youll gain more time by having somthing faster rolling than grippy.
