[#4982534]

I've just got a Fargo to perhaps replace my drop bar alu 29er which is around a kilo lighter in the F&F.

Of course I'll find out myself when I get to build and ride it in a few weeks but has anyone done similar and/or can comment on Fargo use as cross bike/unloaded off roader?

I tend not to use my Fargo offroad (although some of the back roads have been more 'trail' than road recently!) but I did try it a few times when I first got it and it coped fine.
My Fargo is around 10lbs heavier than my road bike but I still love riding it, it's far more comfortable (2.35" tyres help!) and great for plowing through any road conditions. It's my go to bike if the weather is anything but 100% dry.
It's no MTB but its fine offroad and probably a bit more capable than CX bikes due to the fact it has discs and the ability to run proper offroad tyres.

Fwiw I just did a 50 mile "cx sportive" on a Fargo - about half road / half tracks around the south downs. It was fantastic, almost as quick as cx bikes on road and miles better off road. I came in 5th which I put down to the bike mainly - I'm a 15 stone 48 year old lump

I think it is excellent off road 90% of the time - needs to be getting reasonably technical before it gets out of its depth - and buzzes along pretty well in road, even on Mtb tyres

Cheers guys. I guess my Q is more about comparing it with a lightish alu & carbon fork rigid MTB really (mine having drop bars)
